I've checked musical.ly which is a social network for creating, sharing and discovering short videos. What do they strongly underline is that it is an app for at least 13 year-old children. Terms and conditions are in English only and they are quite complex. I couldn't find anything about hate speech and inapropriate content, but maybe I missed them. What I liked is the part, you can enter from the home page 'For parents", which not only guides parents through musical.ly but also sends to webpages on bullying and online safety. They set Community Guidelines which are clear and here you can find a rule not to bully, harass or disrespect another users or publish any sexual context. They also advise to report such violations.

I went to Instagram.com since it is the one most of my students use.
The link to T&C is at the bottom of the homepage, and it links to a page in Italian, so it's not too difficult to read. They're quite long though (about 5000 words) and I doubt many young people would bother to read them all, unfortunately. It's not very clear how to file a complaint and how they deal with it, but you can report many situations (https://help.instagram.com/489507671074566)
They refer to both hate speech and cyberbullying and explicitly say they are banned. Finally, the posting guidelines are not easily found, it's easier to know what you can't post. I found this after some searching.

I Chose to have a look at Instagram.com and I found terms of use quite easily. I must admit that the legal part can be quite hard to understand, but nevertheless I think that Instagram has made a nice effort to try to make it accessible. It is very clear how to make a complaint and you can fill out a different form for different complaints. It is also quite clear how they will react on complaints. Regarding hate speech and bullying there is an article that states:

"You must not defame, stalk, bully, abuse, harass, threaten, impersonate or intimidate people or entities."

Regarding inappropriate content it says:

"You may not post violent, nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually suggestive photos or other content via the Service."

There is a community guideline, both short and long version and the short version says:

"We want Instagram to continue to be an authentic and safe place for inspiration and expression. Help us foster this community. Post only your own photos and videos and always follow the law. Respect everyone on Instagram, don’t spam people or post nudity."

It is my opinion that Instagram T&C is professional and authentic.

The majority of my students use skype, whatts app, messenger and snap chat. Some also have fb even though they are all under 13 years of age.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not read the terms and conditions when they sign up to these applications. In addition, when they do know of some of the terms they ignore them and give fake information, such as their age in order to create a facebook account.

With regards to flagging inappropriate content I stress the importance of students going to a trusted adult for help when they encounter anything inappropriate online. I also give them some basic tips such as blocking a person and not using websites and apps that are not good for their age

At school we stress on the importance of telling an adult about anything that might upset them whilst they are online.

The most popular social media platform among my students is Instagram (63% of those having a social media account). Instagram’s T&C is easy to find, but hard to understand them. It is clear what you can do to make a complaint but not so clear what they will do when they receive it. It is easy to report hate speech, cyberbulling and inappropriate content in general. Instagram’s Help Centre includes relatively comprehensible community rules. My students (13-15 years old) do not read the terms and conditions before registering in a social media platform as they find them long, boring and extremely difficult to understand.

The most widely used platform among my 10-13 years old students is Instragram. They never read its terms and conditions, they do not even know their existence and functions. However, even if in a hypothetic future they read them, they would certainly have great difficulties in understanding their meaning. Moreover, it is not easy to find them on the platform and to understand the different clauses. They do not mention hate speech, cyberbullying or other forms of online dangers.
This means that we have the duty to teach and make our pupils aware of the possible dangers and solutions when using similar paltforms.

My 15-19 year old students make a broad use of lots social platforms as Facebook, whatsapp, instagramm. As a teacher I share a whatsapp group with them to get them informed about special school notifications or to answer to some of their questions about HW or their doubts about school topics. . I teach in a high school, my students have an age group between 14 and 19 years, they use different social platforms daily. We have a class WhatsApp group where we share school information such as: exercises, insights, questions, opinions on topics under study or in-depth study. My students are active on Facebook and Instagram. The latter seems to be overtaking Facebook in popularity among teens. This is what I found out about Instagram T&C:
1. T&C are "Quite easy" to find, although the choice of colour for the menu makes it a bit too discreet on the page.
2. The essential terms are "Very easy" to understand. Reading for more detail can be more difficult, though.
3. Making a complaint is "Very clear", since the Dealing with abuse option is high up on the T&C menu and provides direct links to information on how to block people and report abuse.
4. When they receive a complaint, it is "Quite difficult" to see what they will do (apart from investigating all reports).
5. There is information about how to deal with accounts that promote hate speech, but it focuses on harassment or bullying and does not give a lot of specific information.
6. Cyberbullying gets a lot of attention and there are links for external resources about it.
7. The T&C are quite clear about inapproppriate content and give some guidelines about how to deal with it.
8. There are Community rules, which are easy to find and are clear about what you can or can't post. There is also an "About us" section, but only in English, even if the T&C are available in Portuguese.

My students are 11-14 years old. They usually use Instagram Facebook and Whatsapp.
We share different kind of materials through Whatsapp, for example simple school activities, a variety of school informations. But their favourite social media is Instagram. I asked them if they read the T&C before they accepted them and they said no. We tried to find the T&C but we weren't able to do it.

One of the social media platforms used by pupils in my school is Facebook.
It has very easy to find terms and conditions and quite easy to understand. It is very clear what you can do to make a complaint and it's quite difficult to see what they will do when they receive a complaint.
The T&C have paragraphs about hate speech. According to one of the rules, bullying is fobidden.
T&C also has a rule that mentions that inappropriate content is not allowed.
I am not sure about the community guidelines, haven't seen anything about it.

We had certain issues with hate speech, as we are a very multicultural school in Berlin.
We always try to react very quick and we have a brillant school social worker.

We did a survey recently as part of Safer Internet Day and found that students mainly use Snapchat as a means of communication.

The website has a Community Guidelines section which highlights the purpose of Snapchat. They then present guidelines for using Snapchat which include references to adult content, invasion of privacy, threats & violence, bullying, impersonation and hate speech amongst others.

Guidelines are also available in very accessible language on how to report abuse, report a safety concern and also on how to report if you are concerned with another users safety.

Overall very accessible for all ages with the use of plain English and images to support reporting.

I think it would be important however to complete a lesson on this with students to ensure they are aware that these features are available as many don't read T&C etc.

In my school, it's not unusual for pupils to have a facebook profile regardless the condition conserning age limit - how old should you be in order to register. We believe that many children use Facebook
without their parents' knowledge. Anyway, not all of them read conditions and instructions for using Facebook, which is quite worrying.
Teachers in our school advise pupils to read the rules about privacy protection and obey them. Also, we advise children to address their teachers if they come across certain undesirable content.

We have had some issues recently with Snapchat, specifically related to the use of Sarahah. We also have teachers concerned about the implications of allowing students to have phones in class - because they could surreptitiously take pictures

I am not currently teaching, but from experience I know that Facebook is the most used by students. I applied the questionnaire to my children who do not have FB but download the game app. I noticed that they do not read the conditions, they accept everything in order to download the app. I was horrified by the violence of the games because the commands are for killing. These dialogues are internalized in children and become the usual, which is a way of instilling violence in their daily lives. It is a form of peer violence and bullying without any awareness and accountability. Spooky.
