Lord of the Flies

The murder of the sow from the boys, shows how savage they have become. It also foreshadows the death of Piggy. The conch "is described as pink and creamy" which would generally would be more likely used to describe females than males. Since the conch was a sonic symbol to Piggy and the only female on the island was the sow. This makes Piggy more feminine. Pigs are known to eat anything and everything that's edible that is placed in front of them. The murder of the sow is the climax of the book, as Simon watches he sees the savageness of the other boys unfold infront of him. Simon thinks the pinhead is talking to him, it reminds him of Beelzebub, the Prince of Demons, which is the meaning behind Lord of the Flies. The boys did not want to be maintained and managed did through the order of civilization. The hunt for the sow brought out their savageness that would eventually happen from being alone on the island without any order. The murder of Piggy and Simon was due to insanity and loss of control - just as how a pig has no control when eating everything infront of him.

sites.google.com/site/thelotfisland/home/the-murder-of-the-sow

www.jstor.org/stable/4345265

Why makes Pigs so Scary and used commonly in the Horror genre?

What does the pig provide on the farm besides meat? Or just being a compost machine? When people think of what pigs do for the farm, the first and usually only though it is bacon. To get the meat, the pigs are slaughtered. The idea that all pigs do is eat anything that can be eaten placed before them is correct. They will eat their own offspring if they are hungry enough and will eat human remains as well. The life of a pig consists of eating whatever is given to them to fatten them up so they can be murdered to then be consumed. Pigs are used commonly throughout the horror genre because "they invoke that feeling of frenzy of compulsion, of the desire to chomp into you because they're acting the rational and sound. They have devolved to pure animal hunger, and are willing to take you down for their next meal, in whatever way whets their appetites." Canadian serial killer, Robert Pickton, used pigs to destroy the bodies of the prostitutes he murdered. He had fed their remains to his pigs which concealed the evidence and because many of the bodies were eaten by the pigs, he was only charged for 27 murders instead of the 80 that he committed. The Saw Franchise uses pig masks when attacking their victims to get the message across that it has reached the point of pure savagery. Numerous appearance of pigs are in the series; including the Chinese Year of the Pig, the pig masks, one of the games taking place on a family pig farm and even using pig remains in a trap. Pigs are a symbol that occurs throughout all 8 of the films. Other examples of pigs in horror movies/series include Criminal Minds, The House on the Borderland, Professor Pyg from Batman and the sequel to Amnesia: the Dark Descent."

www.deviantart.com/thelavendercat/journal/Why-pigs-are-so-scary-a-pretentious-analysis-552763679

Importance of Pigs in Judaism

In Judaism eating pork is prohibited and maybe the biggest resonance for Jews. Many animals are included on the list of forbidden foods, including camel and rock badger, while the pig is the last of the mammals and seems to be more like an after thought. According to the Torah, for animals to be considered Kosher they must chew their cud and have clef hoofs. However, the pig has clef hoofs but does not chew its cud. So it does not violate the standards of Kashrut as flagrantly compared to other animals. It might be expected that eating pork would be less offensive that do not meet either criteria, when it is actually worse. The reason that the pig is the bigger resonance is because of a story taught by Rabbi Meir about a host. The host welcomed a guest into his home and offered a meal, but was not interested in dining with him so he ate very little. This made the guest feel uncomfortable and so he did not eat his fill either so that he did not appear gluttonous. The host's actions made it so "the guest was too embarrassed to eat his fill. The host's intentions were good, but the guest left hungry and ashamed." The pig does not chew its own cud, and therefore it is a representation the story of the host. In Judaism it is taught to be welcoming and to be a respectful host and the story and the pig are remainders to be so.

www.myjewishlearning.com/article/lessons-from-the-pig/amp/

Why are Pigs so Dirty?

One main reason eating pork is considered in many religions is because pigs are considered unclean. This is not based on any scientific basis, but is simply because they do not chew their own cud. Another is because they roll in mud. Pig skin is very sensitive and is easily burned, similar to human skin. In order to protect themselves from the harmful sun's rays, they coat themselves in mud to act as a natural layer of sunscreen. The mud is a way to thermoregulate their temperature because they cannot do so on their own; they do not have sweat glands. This wallowing in mud helps lower their body temperature up to 2 degrees celecious, or 3.6 degrees farenhite. Rolling in the mud gives better results than compared to dipping themselves into water, because of how quickly the water will evaporate but the mud will stay on their skin to protect it. Even when the temperature is not hot outside, pigs will still cover themesevles in mud. It is a way to rid parasites and also a possibility of marking their territory in the wild. Pigs don't roll around in the mud just for fun or to make a mess. It is a method to survive, and they should not be written off as "dirty" because they do what they need to live.

www.jstor.org/stable/164052

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.livescience.com/13953-pigs-evolved-mud-wallowing.html

Forbidden Food?

Not only in Judaism is it forbidden to consume pork. In Islamic traditions eating pork "can be considered as a grave religious insult or a cultural transgression." The organ of the pig is why eating pork is considered to be a common taboo, it was revealed by God/Allah. However, Douglas raised three different hypotheses about the purpose of pork being forbidden. The first being that it is simply to instill discipline among the followers. Second, is that there's good and bad, and each person has the ability to chose which to do in their life; divine guidance to help the followers make their decisions. Lastly, to distinguish between social class groups of identities for religio-ethnic reinforcements. But, Douglas later rejects his three propositions and realizes that the taboo against eating pork is to create a separation between the holy and supernatural world. The dietary restrictions are to ensure that divide and for the followers of God/Allah to show their religiousness. Harris had created an idea that focused on the main sources of the taboo, such as an ecological determination and the research is especially important to ancient Egypt. Diener and Robkin have similar epistemology. The early Egyptian origins are noted that Muslims were definitely not the first group to adhere to the taboo. Pork was widely eaten by poorer people. In the Jewish Prophet, Moses was considered a high-ranking civil servant during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II, which made Moses exposed to the higher class standards such as the fact that pork was forbidden. So after the conflict that arose in Egypt occurred and Moses led his followers out, he maintained the culture of the higher class by keeping pork to be considered a taboo. The prohibition of pork has been to show a sign of dedication to ones religious views and to separate the Egyptians, Muslims, and Jews from the lower class people in their society.

www.jstor.org/stable/164052

In the limestone forests in Guam, seed dispersal for the plants there has become problematic. Due to human activity there are no longer birds inhabiting the limestone forests. Most deer and pigs have been documented worldwide for the damage that they cause to the forests' environment. However, pigs helps disperse the seeds of these plants. Though pigs cannot fly and do not have feathers like birds to transport the seeds, they still manage to assist in regenerating the forest. Especially in limestone forests where pigs would struggle to find places to wallow in water and mud, they are considered positive unlike deer. Removing the pigs from the limestone forests in Guam would do more harm than good. It may have a detrimental effect on the spreading of seeds and could cause for extinction of certain plant species in the limestone forests. The pig may not give benefits to the farm life but, in Guam they are saving the lives and spreading them of different species of plants.

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180430102508.htm

Why do we use Pigs in so many Metaphors?

Most of the metaphors that contain pigs are derogatory towards them. "Your room is a pigsty" is to explain how much of a mess it is. The common expression used to explain the impossible, "when pigs fly." Why not when elephants fly? Are both of these metaphors a result that pigs don't supply much on the farm except for meat? Pigs do not have wings so they lack the ability to fly, similar to humans and most other animals. Singling them out to just say that for this specific species its impossible is increasing the species divide. In the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, they give thousands of pigs the opportunity to fly. This is to boost morale in the community to achieve what they believe is impossible. However, "bring home the bacon" is considered to a positive metaphor because it in encouraging to do well. However, the process of getting bacon is to slaughter a pig. Therefore to get what they need they have to be aggressive. Pigs in these 2 metaphors explain that people must fight and aspire for their dreams. Yet, is it more necessary to be inspirational than to consider the life of another animal other than a piece of meat or saying how useless they are?

http://yourpathpersonaltraining.com/when-pigs-fly/
