“‘Kamaswami is just as clever as I am and yet he has no sanctuary. Others have it who are only children in understanding. Most people, Kamala, are like a falling leaf that drifts and turns in the air, flutters, and falls to the ground. But a few others are like stars which travel one defined path: no wind reaches them, they have within themselves their guide and path.’” (Hesse 72)

This passage describes the recurring idea of there being two different types of people, one following a path of self-control and the others being guided by the conditions around them towards a predetermined end. We can see this concept reflected in many human cultures, from Plato’s image of those in the cave versus those who look beyond the illusion to Modern ideas such as the Red/Bluepill or the “NPC” stereotype. What Siddhartha is talking about is just another instance in time and space of this idea, with him applying it to his own life, viewing himself and Kamala as the ones who take on the role of deciding their lives for themselves.

Siddhartha is becoming more independent and is beginning to have faith in himself and his decisions.

Question: Do all people (both within the novel and real life) have the kind of “guiding voice” that Siddhartha possesses, or is it something specific to him?

I believe that all people do possess this guiding voice, it’s just a lack of adherence to it that brings it to become neglected and unrecognized. It seems that the more severe the action, the more likely this “voice” is to be heard, meaning that it must be present within most people, if most people are to understand the bad qualities of certain actions.

While Kamala’s story has ended, Siddhartha will still live on and perhaps achieve enlightenment whilst raising his son. Siddhartha is probably the closest to doing so that he has ever been throughout his journeys. The end is likely near.

It is where Siddhartha almost kills himself, but also where he achieves enlightenment.

Does having an enlightened one as a guide increase or decrease one’s chances of attaining Nirvana as they did?
It is clear from the example of Govinda and of all of Gotama’s other disciples that the passing down of enlightenment from one buddha to another through mere teaching is far less certain than expected. It could even be argued that Gotama unintentionally held his followers back from true enlightenment, as they lived and died expecting to receive it from him while they should have received it from experiencing that which life has to offer, choosing their own path like Siddhartha did.
