Battle of Grunwald - one of the greatest battles in the history of medieval Europe, fought in the fields near Grunwald on July 15, 1410, during the great war between the Teutonic Knights, assisted by Western European knights under the command of the Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen, and the combined Polish forces and Lithuanian and small Tatar armies supported by the lancers of both these countries and mercenaries from the Czech Republic, Moravia and from the Silesian nations and escapees from the Golden Horde and private banners, under the command of the Polish King Wladyslaw II Jagiełło and Grand Duke Lithuanian Witold.

The battle ended with the victory of the Polish-Lithuanian army and the pogrom of the Teutonic forces, but it was not used to completely destroy the Order. Malbork - the capital of the Order - was not captured - since the truce of Witold had expired with the northern branch of the Order and the Lithuanian troops began a retreat, the situation on the southern borders of the Kingdom, threatened by the attack by the then ally of the Order, Hungarian King Zygmunt Luxembourger, was also uncertain. Despite submitting to the royal army through Prussian cities, the defender of Malbork, the commander of Świecie Henryk von Plauen, had at his disposal more than 200 active brothers of knights and 362 religious commandos scattered all over Europe, to whom he sent letters for help. The march of the army commanded by Jagiełło to Malbork was slow. Until July 22, 1410 - when Malbork first troops of the Polish-Lithuanian army arrived - the Malbork castle was ready for defense, and its siege proved ineffective. This period ends with the victorious battle of the Polish knightry near Koronowo and the First Peace of Toruń.
