I say this because as mystery readers, you aren’t just floating down the stream of your story. You aren’t just waiting to find out what happens next. Instead, as mystery readers, you
are testing your abilities against the detective’s. You are trying to solve the mystery before your detective does. If the character says, “I just cut up this apple for you,” and
the slices are brown, you have to think, “Hmm, . . . something is wrong here.”

In particular, read thinking about whom the suspects might be, letting any little detail make you suspicious of someone. Remember to jot quick notes about each possible suspect to help keep track of each one as you read further.

Also, jot why you think you
are suspicious of each suspect.
