Distance Learning does not help my Kindergarten. He needs more structural of classroom than on the screen. His attention span is short, needs constant redirected. He knows that we, parents will provide a loving care and help guide him with his school work, but he'll not do what we are trying to get him sit down like in the classroom to do his learning. School is essential, we need to open school for kids' education.

But I'm also getting the impression that there's less and less willingness to safely teach in-person by some voices in our schools. New demands are being made, some of which are unreasonable. There's also messages about not being prepared to teach in person. I guess my question is: what work been done to prepare so far? are teachers and their representatives been creative in coming up with solutions?

How can families in schools where there are more resources (staff, parent participation, robust fundraising) assist teachers and schools where inadequate resources may hinder re-opening? What are the ways that we can support a safe re-opening for all schools? I know that OEA is concerned with the levels of Covid in ever Oakland zip code, which is out of school control, but what infrastructural supports are needed to bolster those schools in higher Covid zip codes (parent volunteers to help with site readiness? Volunteers to ensure safe entry into buildings? Funds for tent structures, ventilation, etc?)

I am concerned that this form of distance learning is not sustainable long-term (through the school year). Kids are getting approximately 1/3 of the time they normally would with their teachers and younger kids (those under age 11) require so much intervention and support. How can schools provide more support to parents?

Thanks for agreeing to talk to the parents - I appreciate it. The negotiations feel like a huge black box to me. I understand the current MOU is ending 12/31. What is being negotiated now? A safe re-opening? A continuation of DL status quo? Improved DL? Something else?

My understanding is that OEA wants zero COVID cases in all Oakland zip codes (for two weeks) before reopening the schools. This is stricter than the state guidelines and likely means we will not open schools this year. What is driving OEA's decision to go against guidance from public health officials to reopen schools? What public health officials have you consulted with to develop these stricter guidelines?

I know that teachers are trying as hard as they can & I'm very appreciative of their effort. I know a lot of work has gone into pivoting a classroom to DL. However, my son's classroom is now my house. (He is in first grade). I'm essentially my son's teacher now (we spend more school time together than the 60 -90 min/ day with his own teacher). I guess the good parts are that I see his learning style up close & where he is excelling & struggling first hand.
