After police did some investigating of where the twine was manufactured, they had two options, and they picked the wrong one, the twine was not produced in this one, in Washington. This was tragic for Thomas because he lived in Vancouver at the time, which made him look guilty, with Washington and Vancouver being neighbouring (sort of) cities.

The twine later on was decided to be produced in Winnipeg, where Thomas did NOT live.
