Start to use social media

I started to use social media when I was in middle-high school. My mother was very strict with me at that time, and she prohibited me from being exposed to social media early. Therefore, I asked my friend helped me sign up for a QQ account (a chat app but also has game and post functions). I checked it sometimes using my friend's device, craving the feeling of sharing thoughts with friends.

What I use

Several social media that I am using so far:
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr

I use these apps to keep track of essential posts our school/department shares/informs, interact with my friends towards interesting posts, watch some videos that relax me by all means, check the news, etc.

Pattern of use
I used to check social media at a reasonably high frequency. However, recently, I have cut down my daily usage to reduce my attention on social media that much. Most of the time, I found myself using Instagram more often than Facebook. For example, I spend almost 30min daily on my phone checking Instagram before bedtime. When it comes to a new post, I almost need to check my phone once I have spare time. I observed that I checked social media more frequently on weekdays than on weekends/holidays. I guess it is because I get more bored on weekdays.

I'm usually more emotionally stable when I'm doing a quick scan of other people's moments. But when I share my posts, I care more about others' likes and comments. Even though I'm not the type of person who desires to be identified and appreciated by others, I still care about what others think of me sharing. I feel confident and engaged in the community when people comment on my posts.

However, being active in checking social media makes me unconscious about the time flies. It often ends up with anxiety and self-denial on the time I have wasted. Therefore, I want to train my endurance ability to control my desire on checking my phone.

I used to be a fan of Tiktok and spent plenty of time scanning through the posts as long as I had time. Then I quickly got distracted and lost concentration when I needed to focus on the work at hand. It was like Tiktok had taken my attention and enlarged my desire to check my phone. By the time I realized how much time I had spent as a sunk cost, I had decided to delete the app permanently.
