Screwworms are not fun. Not only are they flies, which are inherently gross, but they like "laying eggs in the wounds of animals". I wouldn't want to get a scab one day and the next I have about 900 flies growing inside me. Thankfully, they have absolutely no impact to the environment. "These insects, particularly, are not playing a viable role in any ecosystems, so taking them out doesn’t impact anything else. And it actually saves the lives of animals and saves the lives of humans". So not only do they lay eggs in wounded animals, but they're also insignificant to their ecosystems. Getting rid of them not only a favor to our farmers and their livestock, but also to the ecosystems they impact.

They can also attack humans but it is not as common. These flies can also affect industries in the United States. However, scientists are trying to come up with a solution to stop these flies from eating their victims. One way that they will try to stop the spread is to sterilize the flies. The United States plan is to "Construct a sterile fly production facility in Edinburg, TX, at Moore Air Force Base". If these plans work, it will benefit our cattle and our farmers.

I've always hated flies, now how I'm learning about screwworms which is a threat to animals and humans, due to them deposing eggs into any open wounds which can lead to larval infestations, I hate them much more. These types of insects can kill any individual if they are not treated immediately, which sounds terrifying. "Since the 1970s, the screwworm has largely stayed out of the United States," but what about now? are screwworms now in the United States, if so how can one avoid them? “Screwworm’s a pretty specialized thing, right? Not too many people know about it or ever worked in it, and if you lose people who have that expertise, that’s a big problem;" okay if it's a big problem how come the government is not doing anything to stop this. Specific irradiation is used on the flies damaging their chromosomes and making them stop producing children, without damaging their ability to fly, but shouldn't scientist make something that would damage their ability to fly? because they're harming our environment and why do we even need screwworms. "Eradication is the best way to control screwworms," if this is a beneficial way to control them then how come nobody is using this "best way." I've learned that the cattle industry is facing high feed prices, drought and consolidation, because we don't do anything about this situation. supposedly the agency is using 9,000 existing fruit fly traps. lastly I've learned that there are many types of methods to get rid of these flies, but I think the beneficial way is the changing of climate change. I say that it's the most beneficial way because the flies won't come in areas where it's really cold or rainy.

The New World Screwworm is an invasive fly that originates from the Darien Gap in South America. Although its name might be misleading, this species of fly has been here for years. In the article, Sonja Swinger, an entomologist from Texas A&M, states that "There are two species in the entire world that are known to be of this nature. And one lives on our side of the world. And the other lives on the other side of the world, over in Africa and Europe, and other countries. And it’s called the Old World screwworm. So that’s why ours is called the New World screwworm, based on old histories and coming to the New World.". So technically, this fly species is anything but new, and although the name is misleading, we have to understand that it is not new. The Screwworm is extremely dangerous to warm-blooded mammals due to its liking and preference for warmer climates. This fly lays its eggs in the open wounds of mammals and essentially eats it from the outside in, which kills the mammal slowly while it's still alive. The screwworm was "eradicated" back in the 70's by a program that was being funded by the U.S., in which scientists would drop sterilized male screwworm flies onto these flies' habitats, which in turn would prevent the flies from being able to reproduce. All of this was working until recently, when these flies started to move north into Mexico and the U.S. When asked why they're moving up north, Dr.Swinger states that " that’s tough to pinpoint. One of the issues is mild winters, because this is a species that is tropically based. It doesn’t do well in cold temperatures. But as you have consistent, mild winters in an area, that can expand its range". So, a likely conclusion for them moving up is due to climate change. Overall, these flies are dangerous to everyone due to their implanting in anything from cattle to humans. Additionally, if they implant into cattle, this hurts the cattle industry due to many animals die due to the flies.

New world Screwworms are a pest that eat warm blooded animals from the inside. The pests infect through wounds where flies lay eggs in the animals wounds. New world screwworms originally were most prevalent in South america, but were eradicated, and now are most common in central America and Mexico. The United States invests money into projects in mexico to try to prevent the pest from coming into the US, since cattle is one of the largest industries in the country. A podcast from science friday featuring entomologist sonja swiger claims that millions of screwworm flies are the key to eradicating the pest. This involves the process of radiating flies so that they genetically are unable to have offspring and dropping them hoping that they mate with other flies. This is shown when Swiger States, "you’re oversaturating the wild population with these now sterile males in hopes that these males will be found by those wild females. And then, as they keep mating with the sterile males, they think that they are bred in order to lay eggs. And they do lay their eggs, but they lay eggs that don’t hatch." Although this podcast shows a path to the eradication of the pests, an article from Drovers claims that the mexican government is not doing enough, allowing for the screwworms to get as close as 700 miles from the US border. According to the article, Colin Woodall, the ceo of the NCBA told them, "the country has poorly managed the situation so far . . . it’s because of the Mexican government’s failures that Rollins stepped up and closed the border on Sunday to “send a very clear signal that they have failed, and they’ve got to step up their approach.”" As stated before, the US livestock industries are some of the largest in the country, which is why the United States is putting a lot of pressure on Mexico into getting rid of the pest. The US cattle herds are the smallest than they have been in 60 years and the screwworm can also be deadly to many other species.

The New World Screwworm Fly is a disgusting creature sent straight from the devil himself. The average housefly is already annoying with all its buzzing and speed, however the screwworm could be described as a housefly on steroids. "Blowflies in general are cool group of insects... But their role is as decomposers. They come in, they clean up a carcass, which is a disgusting thing to think about. But somebody’s got to do it. So we’re happy they’re there and want to do that for us. But this one decided to be a little different and decided to make the carcass, which means it lays its eggs, when you’re still alive, on the body." This quote shows a comparison between the blowfly, an insect that decomposes and cleans a carcass and the screwworm, an insect that actually creates the carcass itself by finding an open wound in an animal or person and laying eggs in there. The larvae then start to eat the organism from the inside out. This comparison shows the huge difference from an average species of fly to this monster which is capable of killing full organisms. However thankfully scientist were able to come up with a temporary solution. "you’re oversaturating the wild population with these now sterile males in hopes that these males will be found by those wild females. And then, as they keep mating with the sterile males, they think that they are bred in order to lay eggs. And they do lay their eggs, but they lay eggs that don’t hatch." In more simple terms they create male screwworms in laboratories, sterilize them so they are unable to reproduce and drop them over areas infested with female screwworms. Once dropped on the female screwworms the males with mate with the females, the females will think they are bred so they can lay eggs however the males were sterile during the mating so nothing technically happened and since the females can only mate once they are now also unable to reproduce. The females not knowing the males were sterile will still lay eggs in open wounds however since no actual reproduction occurred with the males the eggs will not hatch.

The Screwworms are considered very dangerous not only to the human health, but to the economy as well. They are known for laying their eggs on the wounds of warm-blooded animals and slowly eating their victims from the inside out. As Swiger asserts, "So they will attack a number of animals, including humans, which isn't common, but it can happen." This implies that the danger it could bring is not limited to animals only, but even to human bodies, regardless if it is a rare circumstance. It is important to be aware of the threat that it poses to life, as it greatly affects the living conditions of these organisms and impedes the healthiness and growth of their lives. Moreover, the fight against these flies continues up until this day as the United States Department of Agriculture announced their plans of building a facility where they could produce domestic sterile fly to combat the harmful Screwworms. As the USDA secretary affirms, "The facility, when it is up and running, would be able to produce 300 million sterile screwworm flies weekly that can 'eradicate the parasite.'" This is one of the ways to stop the spread of these flies along with using pest control, keeping track of their movement, and dropping sterile flies. In this way, the scientist could minimize the threat and danger pose by these harmful flies to the living organism's health as well as the industrial sector.

The New World Screwworm fly (NWS) is a threat to North America and they have to be stopped. The NWS is "notorious for laying eggs in the wounds of animals and slowly eating its victims from the inside out." This poses a threat to the agriculture and food production industry because the fly spreads disease. The fly was "successfully eradicated from the US decades ago, but has recently been moving north from South America into Central America and Mexico, with concerns that it may cross the border into Texas." The flies have been moving north because of better weather, they don't do well in areas where it can get cold and the southwest typically has mild winters. The good news is that scientists had identified the problem and are already coming up with solutions to stop the fly from reaching the United States. One of the solutions is to sterilize males by radiating them in a lab and sending the flies to places where wild ones live. Radiating the males makes them unable to produce eggs with the females and since the NWS only mates once in their lives, the population will shrink. This process started in the 1950s so scientists have been able to refine and ensure that there won't be any consequences for other life for sending flies to wild areas.

The New World Screwworm is a fly that is known to be "notorious for laying eggs in the wound of animals and slowly eating its victims from the inside out." This could be dangerous for other animals, as those flies spread diseases and can contaminate other animals, including humans. According to Sonja Swiger, "So they will attack a number of animals, including humans, which isn't common, but it can happen." This shows the danger that it could bring to the lives of humans. In this situation, it is important for those people who live in the areas that are most affected by the flies to know the threats they pose. Those flies have also been moving, since they do not do well in cold temperatures, which could impact more places and animals. Scientists have been looking for a solution and have already found one in the 1930s to the 1950s. The first solution includes radiating the flies and making them unable to have offspring. In the solution, it would make it impossible for the males to produce eggs with the females, and that would cause the population to shrink. Since those flies do not play a crucial role in the ecosystem, their removal would not impact anything and could save the lives of many animals and humans.

The new resurface of the screwworm is something scary and distributing to me. The USDA article said these pests can lay eggs in wounds of animals, and when the larvae hatch, they eat away at the flesh until the animal could even die. That honestly sounds terrifying, and it makes me wonder how something so small can cause so much damage. The USDA is trying to stop them by building a big sterile fly facility in Texas and they said “the construction of a domestic sterile fly production facility will ensure the United States continues to lead the way in combating this devastating pest.” Producing 300 million sterile flies a week sounds wild but it’s actually smart because it stops the screwworms from reproducing. Sage Lenier said in the Science Friday article that learning about problems “just left me feeling helpless… contending with the gloomy predictions for a doom-filled future.” That’s exactly how I’d feel if I only learned about how dangerous screwworms are without knowing there’s a plan to stop them. These pests could affect our farmers, livestock, health and much more. Both articles connect because one shows how we need hope when learning about problems and the other shows how science can actually give us solutions. To me it proves that we can’t just sit in fear but that we need action and knowledge.

Screwworms are dangerous flies that threaten livestock and even humans. The Science Friday interview explained that the insect is "definitely a very bad insect to have around," since it lays eggs in the open wounds of living animals. The CNN article also showed how dangerous they are, “the female fly… will lay up to 200 to 300 eggs… they immediately start burrowing and feeding on the tissue of that animal.” My viewpoint is that fighting screwworms is necessary. If we don't solve the screwworm problem, it could undo years of progress spent protecting U.S agriculture. That is why I believe a solution is necessary. Even if it costs millions of dollars it would be worth it because it would remove any danger to animals, ranchers, and food supply chains. Without a solution food supply chains would be decimated, meat and dairy prices would skyrocket. This is also why education is very important, to support a solution people need to understand the problem.

The resurfacing pest of the screwworm is one that shouldn't be messed with, as it is affecting the lives and animals, and maybe even one day us. The New World screwworm was at one point successfully eradicated from the United States many decades ago, but has moved around recently into South America, Central America, and even Mexico. These insects are quite deadly, stating, "this fly is notorious for laying eggs in the wounds of animals and slowly eating its victims from the inside out. But though these flies are causing great terror to animals, scientists have developed a strategy to stop these pests. The tactic is done of growing these flies in a laboratory to understand the insects, and eventually kill them. It is important for managing them, because since scientists find out how to grow and manage them they will, "destroy them in a genetic fashion that prevents them from producing future offspring." It is important for the screwworm to be eradicated again as they are affecting animals and their industries. These animals, such as cattle, is important for industries in the United States, and overall the screwworms will cause a major impact in these businesses if they continue to harm cattle and other livestock. Not only is it important to get rid of these flies, but it's also important for all people to have knowledge in these dangerous pests, as they could not only come after their own pets, but possible even themselves. When we learn about the screwworms, we can learn how to take care of them in the future.

The new world Screwworm is a fly that is heading up north is a huge threat to livestock like cattle. This is because they attack any warm blooded animals and will even attack humans. This is dangerous because science Friday said "This fly is notorious for laying eggs in the wounds of animals and slowly eating its victims from the inside out." which would largely affect livestock. Cdc.gov also said "They could also be in your nose, eyes, or mouth.". These flies typically lay 200-300 eggs at once in open wounds and then start to eat the animal form inside. This is an important issue to solve because it can save animal and human lives. When attacked by these flies you can experience bleeding from open sores and have painful skin wounds. However scientists have delovopled a stragity to stop this fly by dropping millions of bugs out of an airplane to get rid of these fly. Most people knew nothing about this because of the lack of education and is a reason why it is taking a long for a solution to be created.

Screwworms are not only a threat to animals but they are a threat to people. They lay eggs into the open wounds of not just animals, but people too. Once that is done, these animals are eaten from the inside out leading to nothing but pain. "We do target talking to livestock folks, because we know people who own cattle and other livestock are going to be impacted. So we just want people to be aware, to understand its importance and the significance and the reason why we need to keep it out of the United States.” This quote just shows that experts see that screwworms only provide negative impacts to animals and farmers. Getting rid of screwworms would benefit everyone. If they were to go extinct, then potential threats to animals would be no more. "These insects, particularly, are not playing a viable role in any ecosystems, so taking them out doesn't impact anything else. And it actually saves the lives of animals and saves the lives of humans.". Screwworms are destructive and do no good for animals or people. Scientists are trying to come up with a solution to this threat because they recognize also that these are nothing but destructive pests. No warm blooded species is safe from this threat and that is why people need a solution.

I learned that screwworms are very harmful and that they need to always be kept under control. In the first article, it says that "So they’ve been here a long time, back into the mid-1800s. And as our industry started to grow in the livestock side and we saw the impact of this fly, it was felt that they needed to be managed. And the way to manage them, of course, was with that eradication program." The first article mentions and describes the program, and the second article does the same. In article 2, it says that "Flies are fed a carefully formulated mixture of egg, milk, and powdered hemoglobin that mimics the conditions of a wound. The flies are blasted with radiation before they are released into hotspots, where the sterile males will mate with wild females to produce infertile eggs." This program has been around for a long time, but the factories that operated it were let go. This is what made the screwworms become a bigger problem recently. In Article 2, we see a more personal look, and it includes the perspectives of ranchers. This article helps me see more closely how this situation is impacting people and how great an impact it has. It is mentioned in the article that a rancher says that if an outbreak happens, he needs around 10 cowboys to help him out. It is then shared that he only has 2. Overall, both articles helped me see how much harm screwworms bring and the worry the public has.

New Screworms are pests that are a threat to our ecosystem, food chain, and even us. New Screwworms are fly-like insects who lay their eggs in the injuries and wounds of every warm-blooded animal, this list includes animals like cattle, cats, dogs, and even humans in rare cases. Also because of this reason many farmers are rushing a solution to eradicate these flies as they lay their eggs in animals and are threatening our food chain in the process “When NWS fly larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of a living animal, they cause serious, often deadly damage to the animal. NWS can infest livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds, and in rare cases, people” (USDA). This puts on display that these insects cause serious damage and health problems to animals and slowly kill them in a brutal way. Furthermore as to why these insects need to be eradicated is they serve no real purpose “These insects, particularly, are not playing a viable role in any ecosystems, so taking them out doesn’t impact anything else. And it actually saves the lives of animals and saves the lives of humans” (Sonja Swiger). Further strengthening that these insects have no real reason to be a part of any ecosystem as they have no contribution to their environment. The management program for these insects is located in Mexico funded by the United States and was maintained in the Eastern side of Panama for over 30 years with no issues until the outbreak. So far the solution to eradicate the new screwworms is by sterilizing the male flies as these insects in particular only mate with one partner their entire lives.

I have learned that the new world screwworm is very dangerous and must be kept under control. For Instance, "The pest was successfully eradicated from the US decades ago, but has recently been moving north from South America into Central America and Mexico, with concerns that it may cross the border into Texas. It’s notorious for laying eggs in the wounds of animals and slowly eating them from the inside out". This shows that the pest is very demanding and dangerous to the animal species witch could lead into a big problem to recover from. I have also learned that the new world pest "screwworms " are blood sucking pests that feed off these infected animals. For example, "This fly poses a serious threat to livestock and wildlife because it deposits eggs into the wounds of living animals, thereby leading to larval infestations. Because they can host on any living mammal, they can also affect pets and humans". Lastly this shows what I have learned.

Screwworm flies have once been an issue, one that has been controlled and taken care of from previous disasters; although they've reintroduced themselves to US territory and have begun creating problems for human life and animal life once more. The main focus of scientists today is to attempt to eradicate these pests. Despite the treasure of each living being in the animal kingdom, these insects have proved themselves to be unimportant and more destructive than helpful. In the 7/18/25 Science Friday broadcast "How Millions Of Flies Can Help Stop The New World Screwworm" with Flora Litchman and Sonja Swiger, Swiger states, "Yeah, they actually are. So, as entomologists, we do try to control pests when we can. But it’s not usual that we try to eradicate these pests completely. And this is one of those that we felt just had to be eradicated to basically better the world, so to speak". These pests have created such a problematic environment, especially for livestock, and like a domino effect, the destruction of livestock begins to deteriorate the way of life for us. It depletes our food source and trade for the US. The way these insects multiply is by embedding themselves into the wounds of mammals like cattle, dogs, cats, and humans on occasion. Currently, a solution has been imposed, disturbing the mating process to create fewer offspring. Although the path has been seen as an expensive solution the product is valuable showing in the CNN article "The US has a plan to breed millions of flies and drop them from planes. Here’s why" by Kaeryn Griesser, Stephen Diebel factors that "When you offset the $300 million to the $10 billion of economic impact these flies would have, it’s an easy trade-off to understand,” thus the entirety shows how neccesary action is. For all, so screwworm flies must be eradicated for comfort and safety.

Screwworms are a big threat to not only humans, but also humans as well. These flies lay their eggs in warm-blooded animals, which can also include humans. The main problem is that the flies are laying their eggs in cattle, which could affect the dairy industry. Luckily, scientists are finding ways to eradicate the annoying pests. One of the ways that they are looking to get rid of the screwworms is to sterilize them. The plan is to "Construct a sterile fly production facility in Edinburg, TX, at Moore Air Force Base". Screwworms also have no impact on the environment, so removing them wouldn't harm any ecosystems. "These insects, particularly, are not playing a viable role in any ecosystems, so taking them out doesn’t impact anything else. And it actually saves the lives of animals and saves the lives of humans". Getting rid of screwworms could mean long-lasting benefits for not only people, but also animals.

Although flies rarely seem to cause harm, Screwworms are dangerous and would impact our country in a variety of ways. Not only was this fly supposedly "technically eradicated from the US back in the ’70s. But now an outbreak has been creeping further and further north into Central America and Mexico, inching towards the US border." This captures our attention on the fact that this gross insect will most likely enter the U.S. Even though this may seem like it is not a dilemma, it is because the Screwworm is "notorious for laying eggs in the wounds of animals and slowly eating its victims from the inside out." This means that the pest will easily be able to reproduce in our cattle, causing an infestation of them, leading to a disbalance in a farm environment and many deaths in any kind of warm-blooded animals. However, entomologists are trying to prevent the New World Screwworm from entering the U.S through a process of making male Screwworms sterile. This process would contain exposing male Screwworms to radiation and then setting them free. This would work because when they mate, the eggs that are bred won't hatch.

The return of the New World screwworm is a big problem that needs attention right away. These flies were gone from the U.S. in the 1970s, but now they are moving up from South America and could reach the U.S. again. They are dangerous because their larvae eat tissue in animals' wounds, which can hurt cattle, deer, and even people. Dr. Sonja Swiger suggests, "It is definitely a very bad insect to have around," showing how serious the threat is. She also explains that these flies "will lay their eggs in all warm-blooded animals," which means almost any animal could be at risk. To fight them, scientists use the sterile insect method, where millions of sterilized male flies are released to stop the population from growing. This works but takes careful planning and monitoring. Dr. Swiger adds that "education is definitely a very important tool," pointing out that people need to know how to help prevent the spread. Overall, we need to act fast, support scientific control methods, and make sure the public understands the danger to keep animals and farms safe.
