I know that law and religion were much more related than in modern times resulting in death/imprisonment for many.

People feared God immensely to the point of superstition. Flagellation was even practiced as a way penance to God.

If you had a child outside of marriage or did something that went against the core beliefs of the religion, you would often be shunned by society or in some cases imprisoned.

Rather than a democratic government having the most power, the church and in particular the leaders of the church would play a large part in power plays for their country.

The majority of people were Christians and the idea of religious diversity was largely forgotten and discouraged.
