I liked this template best because it was simple and straightforward. I use the SMART goal-setting strategy, and it does also have a few simple versions. But the one that Tucker presents seems much easier to manage and attend to for students. Whatever template we use, it must be simple enough to sustain but effective in helping students to learn and to take responsibility for their learning..

Overall, I believe that goal setting with student is probably the most important component of student-centered standards-based learning. I do not know of any other strategy out there that will actually put the responsibility of learning on the student besides goal setting. But it goes deeper than that. We cannot just set goals. We have to evaluate and revise them as the course goes on. If we set the goal, ignore it, then expect that it will work some kind of magic, we are mistaken. Using goals in the right way with students also forces us, teachers, to let go of some of our deeply held powers. For example, students have a say in what success looks like. It is no longer just the opinion of the teacher that the student must conform to. This can be very powerful for both students and teachers if only teachers can learn to let go of some paradigms.

I like this template. I like how it is simple. Focuses on one goal. It could be easily adjusted to accommodate more than one goal at a time. It has questions in each area to get students thinking about how to break down their goal in different aspects.

I liked how in one video it talked about aligning behaviors with personal goals. Made me think about what are the actions necessary to do well in Math. What would that look like? Can I easily create a rubric for that, so that I do not need to create a new rubric for each unit?

Also wrapping my head around due dates, how are kids held accountable with out penalty? There are consequences at some point in time. I still feel the need to mark for completion when it comes to practice. I am okay with not giving a grade, but there needs to be evidence of practice in order to help determine if a student will be successful overall. Just my thoughts.

Also if not grading everything, rubrics, and final produce will need to be more rigorous.

I am not clear on whether I need to focus on academic goals, personal goals, or behavioral goals, goals that are for the whole quarter or for a specific unit of study? I think I need to pare down what I want to work on and what I can follow through on. It seems like the consistency and follow through would be the most important.

Helping students understand how to measure their progress towards accomplishing their goals. How many or How much? How do they know if they reached their goal? Is their an indicator to mark their progress for their goal? Every single part of a SMART Goal plays an important rule in achieving your goal.

I think goal-setting is much more important than we give time or credit for. We need to help students learn to be accountable for their own learning, and goal-setting can help them do that. However, we need to also move beyond simply having them set goals; we need to follow up with them on a regular basis and revisit the process multiple times each year. We also need to give them time on their own to assess their own progress (metacognition!!) and make any necessary steps to get back on track if they're struggling.

Tucker steps back and asks what does the student need to understand to be able to put a goal together. Sometimes I can see where we as teachers have made goals for many years assume the basics of goal setting are already there for the students. I like the probing questions tucker presents not about goal setting but about helping the student understand and connect with what is trying to be achieved with goal setting.

I liked this one for its simplicity. Give students too much, and they won’t do it. This one is simple for them, and a great place for me to start teaching them the principles behind goal setting. This will more efficiently allow me to help students become proficient at setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.

I loved the first one! It is the one I feel is most user friendly for students, however, I think I would also use the second one as a teaching tool to help students understand what SMART goals are and how to create them.

Okay, so setting goals is great...when done correctly. The problem is, New Year’s Day has created a stigma around goal setting. “Set your New Year’s resolutions now!” Wahoo!...until two months have passed, and your goal is in the toilet. With SMART goals, however, this helps eliminate the depression and self-loathing that inevitably accompanies failing to meet goals.

With SMART goals, students are able to not only make that goal, but see the path that will lead them to accomplishing that goal. Too often, we say we want to loose that ten pounds, or learn that skill...but we only have a cursory understanding/plan of how to get there. With SMART goals, you have to break that goal down into steps; measurable, timed, achievable goals.

I feel like students should set Smart goals before each unit. I'm fine with them being personal or behavioral goals but I want at least one academic goal specific to the unit we are starting. That way I can have them reflect each Thursday as part of their ticket out the door on how they are doing on their goals and they are accessing their meta-cognitive powers. It might be good to have them make personal goals so they can realize these smart goals can be goals for anything going on in their life. I like the idea of having the students goals in a place where they can see them each time they come to class. Whether that is in digital form as their screen saver, or physical form in the front of their notebooks. Either will work as long as they can see them. I would have them bring their goals when its time for our conference so we can go over them and I can offer any guidance to help them achieve their goals.

It is very evident that we need to have goals in order to move students away from simple compliance to student driven learning. The problem is that it is such a big shift it will take years to finally sink in. We'll get there, but it is a long road.
