This allowed them to develop their own cultural beliefs and values that may even differ in different parts of the same nation (Southern water tribe vs. Northern water tribe). The main characters in the story travel the world to the different nations and learn that the world is not black and white nor can a person be completely good nor bad. This ideology is also what led Aang to look for a different way to defeat the Firelord, instead of killing him.

Acknowledged as one of the first feminists in history, de Pizan authored her famous literary work The Book of the City of Ladies which combated the prevailing ideas that existed about women's nature. What made her work a revolutionary thinker to women and practically a socio-political dissident to men is that de Pizan dared put women on the same level as men by chronicling in great detail the greatness of many women in history. Christine de Pizan, besides being the first female professional writer, made her mark by showing at least royal and noble women of her time, which saw the political rise of a great many number of female monarchs and regents, that they could successfully navigate a man's world with equally intelligence and ability.

This book was in a way to Middle Ages royal women what Rizal's Noli Me Tangere was to Filipinos.

Dominant Ideology: The form of government is an empire, an undemocratic system where the leader is elected by blood ties and is considered a kind of living god. However, the people seem to accept this fact, as they sing “We all must serve our emperor”.

Gender Roles: It has been believed that women are considered to be second-class citizens whose expectation in life is being the dainty, stay-at-home and obedient wife of a man. In a patriarchal society, a woman’s opinions is not given attention to and they cannot speak for their own as well. There were also many instances in the movie wherein Mulan is criticised and reminded that she is just a girl who will never be worth anything, which reinforces the passive role of women in the past. The active character of men, on the other hand, portrays how they have to be strong and cannot show their emotions. - Larisse Lau

The film Knives Out serves as both a commentary on race and social privilege in the context of America's first world landscape. Martha, a Latin-American immigrant inherits the estate of her boss and friend, Harland Thrombey. Throughout the film it is made apparent that the Thrombey family does not see Martha and her family, as people of their same stature.

Race
A common stereotype for Latin American individuals is that they are illegal immigrants who work blue collard jobs. This theme is spotted on many occasions throughout the narrative. Instances such as the police officer mistaking her for a member of the house help, members of the Thrombey family mistakingly identifying her country of origin, and the frequently mentioned consequence that her family might be deported.

Privilege
The Thrombeys are an entitled family. Many of them greedy and materialistic who want to acquire the inheritance for themselves. The theme of privilege is centered in the 2nd act of the film where the family claiming to have "The money and resources" to support Martha and her family. Although, as Martha mentions, these are resources that she now has.

Classism and Social Revolution in Snowpiercer

Bong Joon-ho is very fond of making films related to social class in order to shed light on the way society is structured. Snowpiercer takes place on a speeding train that goes a post-apocalyptic world in a never-ending winter. All of the world's surviving citizens live on this train, with the front of the train housing the privileged few while the end of the train (known as the tail section) is home the mass amount of the lower class. The premise of the film follows Chris Evans from the tail section making his way to the front of the train as a form of revolution. The very structure and arrangement of the train shows us the idea of classism in the film. Moreover, the tail section cannot move to the front of the train as well, showing how those in power will do everything to make sure that the poor do not rise up. According to the movie, the only way to break inequality in social classes is to "explode" the system (train) and embark towards to something new (the polar bear in the end of the movie). - Annika Bengzon

This is the first film that is characterised by Asian-American characters that is released in a major studio in a quarter century. This film tackles a dominant ideology of culture in Asian countries wherein family is treasured. It tackles variety of traditions that also paves a way to create ideologies of what is right and wrong especially for older generations. On the other hand, Crazy rich asians also tackles the lower representation of the asian community. It represents how powerful each culture can be. -Catherine Co

This racial supremacy is a subsequent trait of Neo-fascism that is a far-right political ideology characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, as well as strong regimentation of society. We see the ideology of Fascism in clear display, the infamous words of Big Brother becoming iconic: "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". However, even if at the end, Winston was broken and participates in doublethink, the story is hopeful that, if one person took so much time and effort to convert into their side, it would only be a matter of time until Big Brother can be defeated. I would argue that while the book tackles the ideology of Fascism, the tone of the book is one of "anti-fascism" (Jose Luis Villanueva)

The movie showed the two main social classes in the real world---the rich and the poor. The world is ending and the last of humanity was placed inside a long train and in the very front lived the rich wherein they had all these privileges such as good food, a comfortable space, and all the amenities while in the very back of the train lived the poor wherein they were all crammed in such a small space with no real food to eat. The system inside the train allowed for this inequality to happen. It shows the clear division in social class and how prejudice and discrimination runs from each class. This ideology of having different treatments depending on your social class is unhealthy. Because of this, the rich only gets richer and the poor only gets poorer. (Marie Mikaela Tan)

Social Class and Political Affairs in Marriage - Mulan II

In the 2nd movie of Mulan, an arranged marriage was set for the three princesses of the emperor. When the three princesses revealed to Mulan that they did not want to marry the royalties that they are told to marry, Mulan told them to break free of the rules and fall in love with whoever they want to fall in love with, but the princesses viewed her as crazy because it seemed impossible and they knew that the emperor would never allow them to marry anyone lesser than them. It is a common belief and old practice all over the world that royalties should marry royalties to keep a good bloodline, a good relationship with the country that the royalties belong to, and to keep the wealth. Even those who aren't of royalty, but are rich exercises this kind of practice just like in usual Filipino TV series wherein the rich guy brings home a girl from a lower social class and is deemed by the parents to be a gold digger or is no use to the family's company and connection. Back to Mulan II, the movie clearly showed that political affairs and social class plays with the idea of how a marriage should be and who they should marry. (Marie Mikaela Tan)

As I mentioned in the discussion, the movie Captain Marvel was able to capture the hearts of many young girls through its demonstration of a powerful female lead. Unlike many Hollywood superhero movies, the main character did not have a love interest, which makes the focus of the film really about the character herself and not the people in her life. While the film tackled many themes, the primary ideology we see is feminism and woman empowerment. - Kyla Algarra

It's very clear how the movie The Help shows the struggles of African-American individuals in the past, it mostly focuses on the maids of the rich which does more to highlight the big difference between them. The movie portrays the different ways in which racism occurred: the need for separate bathrooms, entrances, buses, restaurants, the mistreatment experienced by the maids, etc. Their experiences were awful to the point that they took their opportunities to fight back. They spoke up about their stories which were all published in a successful book and left their abusive employers in order to move on to better things. (Laye Roldan)

The Hunger Games show a clear division of classes through the districts and the Capitol. The Capitol is where the wealthiest live and they do not send tributes to the Hunger Games because it is for their entertainment, something like reality TV. Classism is also evident in the districts because the lower-numbered districts tend to be richer and have more resources compared to districts like, District 12. This gives the lower-numbered districts an advantage because they are able to get more sponsors and receive better training.

Inigo Suarez

The Umbrella Academy is a TV Series on Fetlix that probably broke or brought up every common stereotype. The series is a story about 7 kids with super powers, and their leader in the group is the youngest. The strongest and biggest among them is the one with the softest personality, and in Season 2 the issue of racism and homophobia were very evident. They have characters who are African Americans, Asians, Americans, and also tackled issues such as gender as it also has bisexual and gay characters.

Feminism is very evident in the film by using female guards as the royal security and the right hand partner of T'Challa. The women were shown to be as strong as the men as well and being able to lead a group of people. (Alyssa Castillo)

Ironically, this movie emphasizes the struggle women face by putting it in a man's perspective. This movie highlights the different stereotypes in the two sexes with a twist.

(Christia Akut)

Conservatism in High School Musical 1

Conservatism is defined as "political doctrine that emphasizes the value of traditional institutions and practices" (Britannica). In the movie, High School Musical, specifically in the cafeteria scene where the characters sing about sticking to the status quo, the conservatism ideology can be observed. They sing about following the description of their clique: the athletes should not bake or act, members of the science club should not dance, and others. Status quo in itself is driven by conservatism, as it aims to keep things as they were before.
(Audreana Habacon)

Beauty and Brains: Traits of an Ideal Women in “The Gifted”

The Gifted is a comedy revenge-romance film that features the rivalry between two smart students, i.e. Zoe and Aica, considered as "unconventionally attractive”; both are vying for the valedictorian spot in high school. After both students graduated as summa cum laude from Ateneo and Princeton respectively, they have undergone plastic surgery. Both of them went to extreme lengths to achieve the traits of what one would consider as an “ideal woman”. To quote from the film: “She learned that in order to succeed, it’s not only sufficient to be just intelligent, she needs to be extremely beautiful also”. Here, we can see that society has set standards that for one to be considered ideal and "successful", brains and beauty must be possessed.

Embracing Individuality in Moana

In the Disney film Moana, our protagonist of the same name makes use of her free will to embrace her individuality. Because of challenges faced be her community, she wants to set out and venture outside of her island. This is far from the norm set by the islanders and yet, she follows her heart in order to restore the peace in her island. Additionally, she is meant to be the next ruler of her island but she seems to be different from the usual portrayal of Disney princesses. She is more like a hero on a journey to save her people. Many of Moana's heroic actions stem from her own free will, expressing how she has come to embrace her own individuality, outside of the values set by her community. Instead, she followed her heart in order to protect the islanders. In essence, this sends an empowering message, especially to young girls and women, to be brave and make a difference by setting out on the journey towards what they want to achieve.
(Isabella Murga)

Feminism and marriage in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

In this movie, Mia is preparing to be crowned queen of Genovia, but the parliament of the country wouldn’t allow her to become queen unless she was married because of their law which says so. This law shows the inequality of men and woman in Genovia because the law implies that a woman is not capable of governing a country by herself; she needs a man. Furthermore, it shows how the country thinks men are more capable in doing things (i.e. ruling a country) than women. Moreover, if Mia didn’t find a husband within a month, Lord Deveraux, who is also in line for the throne, would claim the throne instead of Mia. Hence, Mia looks for a husband so that she can claim her throne. She got engaged to Andrew but in the end, Mia becomes queen even if she didn’t Marry because Mia spoke up that she did not want to marry a man she doesn’t love for the sake of the law. She argued that she is capable of ruling the kingdom alone just like her grandmother did for several years after her husband died. She then abolished the marriage law, which the parliament agreed with. In the epilogue of the movie, it is shown that Mia’s abolishment of the marriage law prompted more changes to Genovian law. They now allowed women to be members of the parliament, which shows that the country is moving forward to view men and women as equals. (Mikaela Dyhianto)

In this movie, the main character had the idea of bringing together people who were usually laughed at and ridiculed by the society because of their physical appearances. He found talent and potential in them so he put up a circus and made them perform a musical. Some of the performers were a bearded woman, a guy with dwarfism, an obese man, a hair-covered man, albino twins, a tattoo-covered man, and an 8-foot tall guy. After the play, the performers have received so much criticism and disgust from the audience because of their strange and unusual appearances and were regarded as "freaks". Thankfully, at the end of the film, the people have finally accepted the performers and commended them for such beautiful talent.
-Angelica De Leon
