Christianity in perspective

For My People by Margaret Walker
Allusion: "...praying their prayers nightly to an unknown god, bending their knees humbly to an unseen power..."

Encyclopedia of African American Society is my artifact.
For African Americans, they do not have a religion that is passed down from their ancestors. That privilege was stripped from them once their ancestors were brought to America. Since then a new religion was thrown on to the African ancestors, and over time Christianity was accepted among the new African slaves and the newer generations as time progressed. For Margaret Walker, her words speak the truth because African Americans believe in a religion that was taught to them by their predecessors who adopted it from their masters, some against their will, others to give them hope to live on and continue. She left the imprint of what religion do African Americans truly have, since it is not their own by cultural means. Just the simple fact that African Americans had to choose what branch of Christianity to pursue because certain branches oppose them is more proof that Christianity is not naturally theirs. Walker opens a sense doubt with her words, at the very least that is how I perceive it. It leaves the question of how can African Americans put their faith in Christianity that was unknown to their ancestors because of their own religion ties, used to oppress and submit Africans and later generations, and now in the modern days is happily accepted?
