https://padlet.com/tobin_kelly/jrjmy32y9u0i Today the US Commerce Department sided with aircraft manufacturer Boeing on its complaint that Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier was given an unfair advantage due to extra government support known as subsidies. The ruling means that Bombardier's new C Series jet will cost 220% more in the US due to duties applied. That means no airline in the US will consider the C Series for future purchase and now Bombardier is shut out of the US market for that particular aircraft.  All aircraft manufacturers get support from governments. Interestingly, the fuselage designs of the Boeing 707, 727, 737, and 747, were all the result of military prototype contracts, paid for by the US military.  (Source: Dunlap, S. F.) In my opinion, I don't think this ruling is fair. Boeing is potentially suing Bombardier for subsidizing when Boeing does the same for their new aircrafts.

They whine about how they can't compete with our prices, and so raise them through duties because they want to stay competitive. In their argument they are indeed working for themselves and creating jobs in their country, but on a larger aspect, purposely trying to put your fellow countries under is unethical, and unworldly, and seeing as how the US is one of the biggest importers in the world, they should acknowledge the importance of keeping their global relations in tact.  In other words, this 220% duty is bs and childish.

Therefore, in order to win this case they'd have to prove that they had "material injury" from Delta's decision even though this decision wouldn't affect them, now that they're in a different market. And so this duty is ridiculous in that it's only bullying Bombardier from not doing business in the US. Also, the  financing Bombardier received from the government adhere to global trade rules and so imposing a duty on Canadian aircrafts, because Bombardier is able to sell their aircrafts for cheaper prices, is unfair. C Series planes. This duty ruling is extremely unfair as  Bombardier's C series deal with Delta was in no way "dumping" the 75 planes at lower costs. The US is greatly overestimating production costs with no accurate numbers to back up their claims that Canada unfairly sold these aircraft for lower prices. I believe this act by the US is supposed to keep Canada out of the US aircraft industry market as Trump strongly believes in his "America first" policy, however I feel the action is contradictory to this policy because Canada/US trade relations are mutually beneficial to our economies as we are each other greatest trading partners. Previous to this absurd ruling, both Bombardier and Boeing were able to remain somewhat competitive (although the belief that Bombardier was outcompeting Boeing was completely unfounded, as Bombardier has flirted with bankruptcy before). The current amount takes Bombardier out of the American market, making it far too high. The duty is supposed to make competition more fair for Boeing in their home market, not give THEM the advantage. Instead, I think Boeing is taking advantage of Trump's "America First" policies to give themselves more time to create a more competitive aircraft. According to The Globe And Mail legal experts say that Boeing has no comparable aircraft to the C series. This means that by getting the Trump administration to effectively take the plane out of the market, Boeing has more time to produce a newer, more competitive model.

This also helps the U.S. with the NAFTA dealings. Donald Trump is known for being aggressive with business deals.
