She Walks In Beauty - Korina

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

Tone

Within both of the poems, they start off with a dark tone. Within the poem "She Walks In Beauty", the dark tone is created through diction. Similarily, within the poem "For That He Looked Not Upon Her", the dark tone is created through not only through diction, but through imagery. As both of these poems progress, they start to contrast within their tone. As Maeve's poem continues, the speaker portrays a contrary attitude of whether or not he should love this woman, but as Korina's poem continues, the speaker's tone progressively becomes uplifting as the orator describes a woman's beauty. Both poem's tone is created due to a woman, but the speaker's attitude differs due to how the woman is portrayed within the speaker's eyes.

Theme

Each poem can contain a similar theme of desire, though each narrator desires different things. The desire held in "She Walks In Beauty" is shown through the narrator wanting to be with his love. He describes her appearance and how beautiful she is, so the reader can clearly see that she is all he wants, all he longs for. The desire in "For That He Looked Not Upon Her" comes from a darker perspective. The narrator seems to desire clarity towards his lover. His thoughts cloudy and mind wandering, all he wants is to know what to do. To choose the correct path.

Imagery

Within both peoms, imagery is a huge factor in contributing to the overall message of the poem. Within Korina's poem, the images described are all about the woman, leading the reader to infer that the woman is a positive thing and that the man is all about her. In contrast, the images are mostly about the speaker within Maeve's Poem. This allows the reader to see that the woman is not a positive influence in the speaker's life, and that maybe the speaker is more concerned about themselves than the woman. Both poems eloquently use images to allow the reader to infer the attitudes of the speaker towards the woman, but the images given are under a very different light.

Diction

The diction within both poems was chosen intricately and precisely, but that is where the similarities end. "She Walks In Beauty" contains a beautiful and elegant diction, being used to describe the perfect woman. "For That He Looked Not Upon Her" uses a darker, inclement diction that adds to the confusion and cloudiness of the narrator.

Personification

In both poems, the poets conveys opposing emotions through similar ways. Inorder to show the reader an indepth reasoning behind the speaker's attitude, the poets both use personification. Within Korina's poem, the items that are personified are a heart, a smile, and tints on the woman's face. These personifications adds to the positivity and love the speaker is trying to portray. Saing that the "heart whose love is innocent" shows exemplifies that the speaker hold's the woman within a higher stature than himself. Although, within Maeve's poem, the things that are personified are a flame, eyes, the speaker's head, and grevious. The orator states that the flame trapped him, and that he barely escaped. Although the poet's both use personification to aid in the overall tone and theme, but the specific tone behind the personificiation itself is different.
