This year my goal is to get to know each teacher and student in the building. During the first two weeks of school, I plan to observe every classroom in the building to let staff and students know that I am there to support them. I have created a template, Building Relationships, suggested in Student-Centered Teaching by Diane Sweeney. I hope to use this as a starting point to get to know teachers better and build those essential relationships.

I like activities that allow me to see how students interact with each other on a social / emotional level but also on a cognitive and academic level. Scavenger hunts allow students to explore the room, find resources they will utilize throughout the year, and use the 4 domains of language to acquire the items or tasks that they need to do in order to complete the hunt. I include all levels of learning through visuals, written and oral directions in order to allow all student learning levels to "find" at least something on the list. It also gives me an informal assessment snapshot where I can begin to assess listening and comprehension. This begins to give me an idea of what strengths the students already have and what we can build upon.
