Ulysses S. Grant first performed as a captain during the Mexican war. After the war, he began to neglect his work and drank. He resigned. At the beginning of the Civil War, Grant graciously volunteered for the Union army, quickly ascending in rank. He fought in the battles at Fort Henry (win) and Fort Donelson (win), winning him the nickname, "Unconditional Surrender". He lost the battle at Shiloh, due to a surprise attack from the Confederate army. Despite requests for his removal, Lincoln chose to keep him in the military, saying, "I can't spare this man. He fights." Grant then won the battle at Vicksburg. Grant then lay siege to the capital, cementing a Union victory in the war. After the war, Grant became Secretary of War under Andrew Johnson. In1868, Grant ran against Johnson, eventually winning the title of the 18th president of the United States of America.

Jackson, as many generals had, fought in the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848. He started the war as a brevet second lieutenant, but quickly ascended to the rank of major. After the war, he became a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. His teaching methods were seen as controversial, but effective, and they are still in use today. When the Civil War began, Jackson accepted the role as the Colonel of the Virginia Militia, and he commanded troops at Harper's Ferry. He earned his nickname as "Stonewall" Jackson during the battle at Manassas. He led for the Seven Days Battle and the Battle of Antietam. His demise was eventually brought about after the victory at Vicksburg, due to friendly fire. He died eight days after being shot from pneumonia.

The confederate government sent two diplomats, James Mason and John Slidell on a second attempt to gain support from Britain and France. They traveled to the British merchant ship the Trent where Captain Charles Wilkes stopped the Trent and arrested the two men. The British threatened war against the Union and sent Troops to Canada. Lincoln decided to fight "one war at a time" and released the prisoners.

Emancipation Proclamation as one of Lincoln's big steps to freeing the slaves. It didn't immediately free slaves as it only applied to the areas behind confederacy lines , outside union control. I didn't apply to Southern territory already occupied by Union troops nor slave state that had not seceded This also gave a moral motive to the war.
It also discouraged the the British from supporting the confederacy because the abolitionist movement was strong in Britain offering a strategic benefit to the Union.

Those who could afford were allowed to hire substitutes, it also exempted planters who owned more than 20 slaves. The Union draftees white men between the ages between 20 and 45 for three years. Similarly to the South, it allowed draftees to hire substitutes and it also provided fro commutation.

Citizens of New York City rose into a large riot over Lincoln's approval of the Draft. The riot ended up becoming a race riot and around 100 black people were killed. Poor white workers, especially Irish immigrants thought it was unfair that they have to fight in a war to free slaves that would take their jobs. They attacked well-dressed men on the streets and African Americans.
