I think Marguerite's real hero is Mrs. Flowers. Mrs. Flowers gave her books and taught her poetry. She also told her she had the right to speak and that she needed to speak. Mrs. Flowers got Marguerite out of her shell and got her to talk.Marguerite also really looked up to Mrs. Flowers.

I think Maya's real hero in this story was Daddy Clidell. She had lots of fun with him and she admired him. Although he was not around for much of her life, he was her first real father figure and I believe she personally connected with him better than her biological father and certainly much better than she connected with Mr. Freeman.

I believe Maya's real hero was Mrs. Flowers. She was Maya's initial push to find her voice again. Without her Maya might not have ever been able to find her voice again. Mrs. Flowers had helped her by bringing her voice back through literature
