The biggest way that Elder Bednar's teachings in Increase in Learning are similar to Paulo Freire's philosophy is the focus on active student participation. Freire did not believe that students should passively absorb everything that their teacher teaches them. Likewise, Elder Bednar tells us that learners have certain responsibilities that require them to actively seek out learning. I would say that the biggest difference between these two philosophies is the importance placed on individualism. Bednar believes that we should learn in order to better ourselves and bring us closer to God. Freire believes that we should learn so that we can change the social and political climate.
-Micah Crampton

One of the biggest similarities between Elder Bednar and Freire is that they both want education to be active. They want students to be getting their education and learning it actively. A difference between the two is religion. Obviously Elder Benders learning is going to be much more spiritual and gospel centered compared to Freire.

Wow that is such a great statement. I totally agree! We get so much more out of life in general when we help others rather than when we help ourselves. Not only do we learn more and help others by serving, but when we serve we are also growing ourselves and eventually if we continue the cycle then we will be served in return. When we have a plan and are organized and serving the Lord and others we can receive many blessings.

Both advocated questioning and then searching for the answers to those questions. Studying the Gospel is an eternal quest - not a one and done - Freire didn't have the spiritual vocabulary for it - but he talked about the reading 'speaking' to him - I think this is in the same way we can receive personal revelation through the Holy Ghost as we read scriptures that we may have already read many times before.
I think Freire does speak from a secular view. He calls intangibles - 'humanity' instead of looking at things as spiritual, or from our Father in Heaven. He is wordy, but I don't think he sounded stuck up, it sounded to me like he was trying to provide logic for his arguments by connecting everything the way a logic argument, or geometric proof would.
I am so conflicted about assessment... I have a hard time with memorization - some tests are difficult for me. But I can comprehend concepts and discuss their application in real world settings and make comparisons and judgements. I would be better assessed on effort than on a test. Yet, I have some students with limited skills and abilities that cannot expound upon, or verbalize their learning - modified testing is a useful tool with them. It would be wonderful if we could assess each student in the modality in which they learn best.

They teach that it doesn’t matter if you are poor, white, black, big, small or made in any way that you are important and that you can create changes in society and learn.
Bednar believes that we must be immersed in teachings. Paulo does not want people to be taught in huge amounts, he doesn’t want students to be looked upon as objects. This is true but there is so much in this life to learn and sometimes we must be willing to sit down listen and act upon all the teachings we have been given. Something else I feel is different is Bednar tries to focus on line upon line. I felt with Paulo’s ideas that he tried to hit people with bigger socially complex ideas and concepts while Bednar believes we must work with small ideas and work ourselves up to the more complex ideas. Bednar believes that we must faithfully obey. Paulo who grew up with a lot of oppression is not very fond of one person having more power than another. With Bednar he notes that we trust and obey the leaders and Heavenly Father and their teachings. ---Karoly Despain

I agree with the connection with the BYUI learning model and Freiere. Teachers are never finished being students, and students are never finished being teachers - I especially love the online model because it brings diverse people from different places and cultures with different experiences together so that we can teach each other and share unique perspectives.

Freire's calls for revolution through the democracy of the individual seem quite insistent - but his ideal that all deserve equality is in harmony with gospel principles as we are urged to lift others up and bear one another's burdens. We also need to work for change one by one - but I think we should work within the social framework or work to change the framework instead of trying to overthrow governments and institutions. At least we can receive direction and personal revelation in guiding our actions.

Elder bednar and Freire have very similar view points, but elder Bednar adds a more spiritual side to it. I love the way they state things, and I see elder Bednars point of view as more of an addition to Freire's than an opposite. It is so important that students are actively involved in the community as well as their school, and they illustrated this principal perfectly.

The similar between Elder Bednar and Paulo Freire is both of them state that students need to build up their capacity to reflect and reason. We can't just memoize, receive and repeat what our teachers taught us. It is meaningless if we can't apply the knowledges or principles to our life. "Action is louder than words". Furthermore, both of them state that as a student, active participation is required because this is student's responsibilities and knowledge is associate with diligence. Also, both of them talked about the learning from experience. Through self-experience, we will become what we are.

Holy Ghost is our teacher to help us find the answer. Besides, Paulo Freire advocated that truth is continually explored. However, we believed that truth is 'everlasting' 'unchanged' and 'eternal'.Truth is universal and does not depend on circumstances or place, time and person which I think this is a contrast to Elder Bednar's perspective.

--------JAMIE TSANG

Bednar talked about how it is important to ask questions. These questions may help guide us to answers we are looking for or may help those around us. Bednar talks further in depth about what it really means to know, while Freire mentions that knowing is not simply just "following a hunch." Bednar focuses more on the eternal aspect of knowledge. Knowledge will benefit us in the future as well as right now. I like Bednar's emphasis on spiritual knowledge compared to Freire's emphasis on secular knowledge.

I like what you said a lot. They are interconnected. Elder Bednar taught that we must learn from God. Freire taught that we must teach others to make a better world and to use what we learn to d so and bless the lives of thers which is ultimately serving God. So God gives us intelligence so that wecan use it to serve and glorify Him.

What really stodo out to me about your post was tht you mentioned that to both Elder Bednar nd Freire, students and teachers are one. I thought that was amazing as I felt the Spirit when I read that. And it definitely is how God desires it o be. As He mentioned in D&C "If ye are not one, ye are not mine."
