The Magic School Bus: Voyage to the Volcano by Joanna Cole

read 9/8/17
This book is really cool in that it is fiction and unique, yet it has a lot of fun information for students. It's an interesting read, and easy to follow along. Also, the little letters and charts were great to get quick facts, while continuing the storyline. I would definitely have these in my classroom library.
This book is appropriate for students in grades 2 through 5. I would give this book to students who are interested in science fiction, geology, and series books.
I would use this book to teach about volcanoes, such as the terms like crater or magma. I may also use it to teach about first person narratives.

Magic Tree House: Dolphins at Daybreak by Mary Pope Osborne

read 9/11/17
I liked this book because it was educational, yet suspenseful. It wasn't a mystery/detective book like so many are at this reading level, but it still made you wonder what would happen next or if the kids would ever solve the riddle. I enjoyed the part where the octopus grabbed ahold of their "mini-sub" and how everything led them right back to where they started. I think it's a cool book that inspires students to keep using their imagination.
This book is appropriate for grade levels 2 through 5. Students will enjoy this book if they are interested in series, riddles, ocean life, or adventure.
I would use this book to teach about the ocean life, especially around the coral reef. I could also use this book to talk about plot development.

Junie B. Jones Is a Beauty Shop Guy by Barbara Park

read 9/2/17
I honestly got very annoyed with Junie B. Jones throughout the book. She was an annoying character, especially as she bothered the hair stylist and cut her own hair, but I'm sure young girls would love her and relate to her. She has a very strong voice throughout the book.
This book would be appropriate for grades 3 through 5. Students who love relationships, girly things, and first person point of view.
I would use this book to teach students about first person point of view and establishing tone and mood through their own writing.

The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling

read 9/11/17
This book had a more mature storyline and message that kids could handle, which I really enjoyed. I liked how it paralleled the myth of King Midas and his golden touch. In addition, the author did a great job with imagery and making you feel how John Midas felt. When John was really thirsty in the cafeteria, I felt like I was suffering with him.
This book is appropriate for students in grades 3 through 5. Students who love tales, candy, and suspense woud enjoy this book.
I would use this book to teach about the myth of King Midas, who turned everything he touched into gold, and give it a modern spin. I could also use that to teach about selfishness versus selflessness.

read 9/7/17
I really like this book as a beginner's introduction to mystery novels. I think it's really cool how Cam blinks her eyes to capture a photo in her mind. I even remember doing this as a kid, but forgot that I got it from this book series.
This book is appropriate for students in grades 2 through 4, who enjoy reading about detectives, first person perspective, and family.
I would use this to teach about plot development or about what makes a book of the mystery genre.
