We will continue to review the letter names and letter sounds of the alphabet. We will use our letters to write words based on the sounds we hear in the words. In math, we will continue to focus on number recognition and creating sets. In addition, we will continue to learn about shapes, their attributes, and patterns. 

We finished our unit Taking Care by learning ways to take care of our planet. Also, we ended the year by sharing wonderful experiences traveling around the world to learn about different holidays and how they are celebrated. The boys and girls found it interesting to learn some of the similarities in the customs and traditions as well as some of the unique differences. Happy New Year to everyone!

We continue to learn our math skills (counting, number recognition, counting objects.) and learning our alphabet and letter sounds.

During the holiday break, please practice counting objects! When you see a letter in your environment, point it out and go over the letter sound. Read stories together! Have fun!

We are continuing to work on letters and sounds, along with how many letters are in a given word. Over the break, please ask your child what sounds they can hear at the beginning of words! How many words can they think of that have the same beginning sound? (jingle, joy, jump, Jack, juice)

We are wrapping up how to take care of ourselves and others. This includes recycling and taking care of our planet. Allow your child to throw paper, plastic and cans in a separate bin at home so they can actively help with this important task.

Don't forget to spend some time each evening sharing books with your child. Conversations about the story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) will help with their comprehension! We have been discussing the jobs of authors (writes the words in a book) and illustrators (draws the pictures in a book), as well as print awareness such as the direction we read, return sweep and how to turn a page when the text ends. Every one of our students can hold a book correctly!

• Counts 1-10 items with one to one correspondence , and identifies final number in the set

• We can count up to 10 items.

In social studies, children learn the importance of helping
and relying on others while recognizing that everyone in the community has a purpose. Students will be exposed to geography tools and resources.

Science instruction will focus on properties and their characteristics.

West Memorial Elementary has the most spectacular Multicultural Evening this Spring. We invite families to share their culture with each other. We strive to have families represent countries all around the world. Often, families will bring cultural foods or items from their native country.
