What are MSC Summer Schools?

The summer schools provide a practical and engaging experience of medical education through hands-on activities, online learning, and expert-led sessions.

Students will:

Exciting news for Year 12 Aspiring Medics! The Medics Mentoring Programme launches on 15 December 2025, giving students from Widening Participation backgrounds the chance to explore a career in medicine through clinician-led workshops, a 2-day GP Doctor placement and mentoring. Participants will gain insight into the day-to-day work of doctors and access opportunities such as Med School Admissions guidance and a UCAT preparation workshop.

Residential summer schools give students the chance to try out what it's like studying at university. They include three days of subject tasters, advice and guidance sessions, social activities and two nights staying in halls of residence. Subject areas offered are art & media, engineering, health professions, humanities, science, social science and sport. Students must be 16 or 17 at the time of the summer school to be eligible for our residential summer schools.

On-campus non-residential summer schools -  1 and 2 July 2026

On-campus non residential summer schools for business and law offer students a taste of what studying either business or law is like at university. Students will experience two days of subject taster sessions from within our School of Business and Law, alongside advice and guidance sessions to support them with applying to university.

Online summer schools -  20-23 July 2026

Online summer schools offer a taste of studying a subject at university and an opportunity to complete a short project to support a future application to university. With a wide variety subjects on offer, each online summer school will feature taster lectures, advice and guidance sessions, and live sessions with staff and current students.

Students can register their interest for both on-campus and online summer schools now and we'll let them know once applications have opened.

All our summer schools are aimed at students in year 12/first year of sixth form/college, who are studying a level 3 qualification. Places are limited and are offered to students who meet our widening participation criteria

Through PARTNERS students could receive a lower offer, attend a free academic summer school and access dedicated support from application to enrolment.

Following extensive development work, the PARTNERS application form has migrated to our in house Apply to Newcastle portal. This means that students can find everything they need in one place!

The programme is designed to help applicants enter key economic subject areas where skills shortages have been identified. Through Pathways to Newcastle, applicants can take advantage of:

• An offer of up to two grades lower than typical entry requirements

• A subject specific online module designed by academics in their chosen subject area

A HE Study Skills module designed to aid the transition from school/college to university level study.

The application deadline is 30 January 2026 for students who will begin their undergraduate Law degrees in September/October 2026.

The scholarship includes the following:

• £15,000 per year of a three-year undergraduate law degree, paid directly to the student in annual instalments, to support them with living expenses whilst at university

• A mentor from the firm to guide them through navigating their entry into the profession and answer questions

• A guaranteed place on a vacation scheme with SH, which includes a training contract assessment centre – this means the scholarship could lead to a training contract with SH.

• Regular ‘skills days’ at the firm where scholars get exclusive training sessions, application support, and insight into the sector.

The criteria for applicants is as follows:

• Be attending, and have attended from age 11, a state-funded, non-fee paying school/college

• Be able to demonstrate that you have the academic potential to succeed at university

• Not have already commenced or completed an undergraduate degree OR solicitor apprenticeship

• Meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be in receipt of, or have previously received or have been eligible for, free school meals, pupil premium, education maintenance allowance and/or 16 to 19 bursary

  • Have grown up in a household where no parent/guardian attended university

  • Are, or have been, in local authority care for a period of three months or longer

  • Are, or have been, a full-time or part-time carer

  • Came to the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker

  • Attending a school or college with below average A Level or Higher point score and/or low rate of progression to higher education

Personal statement and interview preparation 1:1 sessions

Students who meet our widening participation criteria can book a 1:1 session with our Outreach team to get advice about writing a good personal statement or preparing for a university interview. 

The online programme aims to help students learn their subject of choice at UG level, develop important academic skills through doing a short research project, and gain experience of university culture. It is designed for students to fit in with their busy study schedule in year 12.

On Pathway students:

• Study an UG subject of their choice (20 to choose from)

• learn in online lectures and tutorials and complete a research project

• attend a free, optional summer school residential

• become eligible for a guaranteed conditional offer.

Through PARTNERS students could receive a lower offer, attend a free academic summer school and access dedicated support from application to enrolment.

Completion of the programme will help you to:

• Strengthen your UCAS applications.

• Impress future employers (whether you apply to university or not).

• Stand out when applying for competitive courses.

• Develop study and research skills.

Psychology and Criminology

The programme is designed to support eligible widening participation students to achieve an A* in A Level Maths. We're looking for students who are passionate about maths, are currently studying A Level Maths and have an interest in studying maths or a related subject at university.

About The Programme

Successful applicants will take part in the following:

• Opening Masterclass (on campus): October 2026

• Two MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses): October 2026 to March 2027

• Online Mentoring: October 2026 to March 2027 (every two weeks, with a break for Christmas Holidays)

• Closing Masterclass (on campus): March 2027

It's important that applicants are able to commit to all elements of the programme, as attendance is monitored for this free programme.

This in-person event provides students with an opportunity to visit the Warwick campus and meet the mentors who will be working with them on the programme. Workshops and sessions will be run by Warwick Mathematics Institute academics and students, as well as MEI.

This programme is designed for pupils from communities that are underrepresented in higher education. We use the criteria below to assess who is eligible to participate.

Priority will be given to applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria:

• You have received or are eligible to receive free school meals at secondary school

• You live in a priority neighbourhood, i.e., an area recorded as having high levels of deprivation (IMD 0-20%)

• You are care experienced, this means you have spent a minimum of three months in local authority care at any time

• You are a Care Leaver, aged between 16-25 who has been in the care of the local authority for at least 13 weeks at any time since the age of 14, including some time after your 16th birthday

• You are estranged from both parents, living independently or with relatives or friends. This would include living in supported accommodation such as a foyer. By estranged we mean you are not supported by nor in contact with either parent

The programme has a focus on engaging students who may face more barriers to seeing university as an option for them, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed. Recent research shows that students completing The Scholars Programme in Year 8, 9 & 10 were more likely to achieve a 9-5 in maths and English at GCSE than peers within their own schools who did not take part in the programme.
