The relationship between money and happiness is often debated. From a psychological viewpoint, money can improve well-being to a certain extent, but beyond fulfilling basic needs, its impact on happiness diminishes. Research suggests that once individuals can afford life’s necessities and some comforts, factors such as relationships, purpose, and mental health become more important contributors to happiness.

For instance, while having financial security can reduce stress, striving for excessive wealth can bring more pressure than joy. Someone might be financially successful but feel overwhelmed or distant from loved ones. Conversely, living in poverty is undeniably difficult, making some level of financial stability essential for peace of mind.

Some argue that wealth provides freedom and enjoyment, which can enhance happiness. However, studies consistently show that after a certain point, more money adds little to overall life satisfaction. True happiness often comes from meaningful connections and experiences, not material wealth.

In conclusion, money is important to a degree, but it cannot buy lasting happiness.

The question of whether money can buy happiness is complex. While money is essential for meeting basic needs—such as food, shelter, and security—it only contributes to happiness up to a certain point. Research shows that once individuals earn enough to live comfortably, additional wealth has diminishing returns on happiness. This is because material goods and luxury experiences, though enjoyable, provide only temporary satisfaction. True, lasting happiness often stems from non-material aspects of life, like strong relationships, personal fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Human connection and emotional well-being are far more significant contributors to happiness than financial success alone. Additionally, the “hedonic treadmill” effect suggests that people quickly adapt to their financial gains and continuously seek more without becoming significantly happier. Therefore, while money can improve quality of life, it cannot, on its own, buy lasting happiness, which comes from deeper, more meaningful sources.

The question of whether money can buy happiness is often a topic of discussion. Money is definitely important to cover basic needs like food, housing, or healthcare, but when you think about it, that’s not everything. Imagine someone winning the lottery. At first, it seems amazing you can buy a car, a big house, or go on a luxury vacation. But studies show that this excitement doesn’t last forever. For example, research by Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton in 2010 found that people are happier when they earn more money, but only up to a certain point. Once they make around $75,000 a year, having more money doesn’t really make them much happier.

This suggests that while money can make life easier and reduce stress, it doesn’t guarantee long-term happiness. After our basic needs are met, most of us find happiness in relationships, experiences, or doing what we love. I think money is important, for sure, but it’s not something we can rely on when it comes to happiness. Happiness depends more on how we live our lives and the people we surround ourselves with.

While financial success is important, life satisfaction is best achieved by balancing wealth with personal well-being and happiness.

To start, having enough money is necessary for a comfortable life. It allows people to afford basic needs, such as housing, food, and healthcare, which can significantly improve their quality of life. However, focusing only on money often leads to stress, long work hours, and neglect of personal relationships.

For example, research shows that while higher income can improve happiness, it reaches a point where more money no longer brings additional joy. A well-paid job might provide financial security, but if it leaves no time for family or hobbies, life satisfaction suffers.

Some may argue that financial success guarantees happiness, but true fulfillment comes from a balance between earning enough and enjoying life. Therefore, maintaining this balance is key to long-term happiness.

In conclusion, life satisfaction depends on balancing financial success with personal well-being.

I’ve recently discovered hobby horsing, a sport where people perform jumps and routines with stick horses. It’s creative, athletic, and just plain fun! Watching videos of competitions made me want to give it a try.

To start, I’ll need a hobby horse (store-bought or DIY) and some space to practice. It seems like a great way to stay active while embracing something playful and unique. Hobby horsing could turn my free time into a mix of exercise and creativity—I can’t wait to try it!

It’s a sport that combines strategy and physical activity, which makes it both fun and challenging. Watching matches and hearing friends talk about it inspired me to give it a try.

To get started, I’ll need a racket, tennis balls, and proper shoes.

Surfing: An Extreme Sport I’d Love to Try

The extreme sport I would like to try is surfing. Surfing involves riding waves on a board, balancing on the water as the waves carry you toward the shore. It’s a mix of skill, courage, and connection with nature.

What excites me about surfing is the challenge of mastering the waves. Watching surfers glide smoothly across the water looks both thrilling and calming. It’s not just about the adrenaline—it’s also about feeling at one with the ocean and enjoying the beauty of the sea.

The scary part of surfing is dealing with unpredictable waves and the risk of falling into the water, especially in bigger waves. The idea of wiping out and getting caught underwater is definitely intimidating.

To prepare, I’d start with beginner lessons in a safe location with small waves. I’d practice balance on a surfboard on land before heading into the water and make sure I’m confident in my swimming abilities.

Surfing looks challenging, but it also seems like an unforgettable adventure. One day, I hope to ride a wave and experience the thrill for myself! Would you give it a try?

Zdenek Hradisky

Hello Anna,

How have you been? Sorry that I havent been in touch lately. I have had a lot of work to do, since I have bought a house in the country side, I have only been here for a week or so and I am really loving it here, because the weather has been great this week and the location of our house is really great, It is quite calm, because I am not near any big city or any large road. The nature here is also quite amazing.

But there is one downside since then road that is infront of our house isnt very well made and id love for that to be changed. Because of that in the rainy seasons which is now it can flood the road since its not in a good condition. Now because of that we are having problems moving in the house, since you live nearby i would like to ask if i could stay the night otherwise i will have to drive back to my parents which is really far away.

Love😘

Nick.

✅ Content & Task Fulfillment

You covered all the points required by the task:

✅ Advantages of being in the countryside.

✅ Something you would change (the bad road).

✅ Something that went wrong during the move (flooded road).

✅ Asking to stay at your friend’s house.

You also wrote in a friendly, informal tone appropriate for an email to a friend.

✅ Organization & Structure

You used paragraphs to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.

However, there are some very long sentences that could be split into shorter ones for better clarity.

Punctuation (especially commas and full stops) is often missing or misused.

✅ Grammar & Vocabulary

Good attempt to use complex sentences with connectors (e.g., “since,” “because,” “which”).

There are several grammar mistakes:

Verb tenses: “I haven’t been in touch lately,” not “I havent been in touch lately.”

Articles & spelling: “the countryside” instead of “the country side.”

Capitalization: “I” should always be capitalized.

Punctuation: Missing commas, missing full stops, and run-on sentences.

📝 What is a run-on sentence?

A run-on sentence happens when you combine two or more independent ideas without proper punctuation or linking words (like “and,” “but,” “because,” or a full stop).

For example:
❌ I bought a house in the countryside I really love it here.
This should be two sentences or linked properly:
✅ I bought a house in the countryside. I really love it here.
or
✅ I bought a house in the countryside, and I really love it here.

🔎 Advice for the future:

✅ Use shorter sentences to avoid run-on sentences.
✅ Always capitalize “I” and names.
✅ Check your punctuation (commas, full stops) to make sure ideas are clearly separated.
✅ Use linking words like “so,” “because,” “although” to connect ideas smoothly.

📊 Grade suggestion (Czech Maturita)

Content: ✅ fully covers the task

Organization: ⭐️ needs improvement (split long sentences, better punctuation)

Grammar: ⭐️ frequent mistakes, but meaning is clear

Vocabulary: ⭐️ appropriate for a friendly email

I’d give you a Grade 2. With improvements to punctuation, grammar, and structure, you could easily get Grade 1!

📈 Cambridge exam level estimate

This would be assessed around B1 (Preliminary / PET level), because while you communicate your ideas clearly, there are consistent grammar errors and punctuation issues.

Hi peter,

I Hope you’re doing fine. We’ve just moved to a new house in the country and it’s so nice. We have big garden and two very nice neighbours. it’s in good position because it’s not too far from city, but still we are almost alone in the middle of beautiful countryside.

But there are a few things that I’d change. First of all I’d like to restore the house, but for now I don’t have enough money. Secondly I’d rather have smaller property, because it takes so much time and money to take care about it.

During our move we didn’t have enough money for a truck. So we couldn’t fit in our car and also a lot of things broke during the ride. For example our tv, so we have to watch animals on our garden.

Next week they are providing electricity maintenance and water treatment. So I have a one question for you. Can we stay one night in your house ? If we can I would be very thankful.

I have to go now, I need to work on our garden and feed animals. I look forward to receiving your reply.

Love,

Elias

✅ Content & Task Fulfillment

You covered all four points of the task:
✅ Advantages of the countryside (big garden, nice neighbors, peaceful location).
✅ Things you’d change (restore the house, smaller property).
✅ Problem during the move (no truck, broken things).
✅ Asking to stay for one night.

✅ You also kept a friendly, informal tone suitable for an email to a friend.

✅ Organization & Structure

Good paragraphs: introduction, main ideas, request, closing.

Generally clear structure.

Some sentences could be improved for better flow and punctuation.

✅ Grammar & Vocabulary

Mostly correct verb tenses and articles.

A few grammar mistakes and missing articles (e.g., “it’s in good position” → “it’s in a good position”).

Spelling and punctuation issues (e.g., “tv” → “TV”; capital letters missing at the start of some sentences).

Vocabulary is mostly simple but appropriate for a B1 level.

🔎 Advice for the future:

✅ Always capitalize the first letter of each sentence (some are missing here).
✅ Use articles (“a,” “the”) correctly: e.g., “a big garden,” “the city.”
✅ Watch out for prepositions: e.g., “take care of it,” not “take care about it.”
✅ Avoid fragmented sentences: e.g., “So we couldn’t fit in our car” → “We couldn’t fit everything in our car.”

📊 Grade suggestion (Czech Maturita)

Content: ✅ fully covers the task.

Organization: ⭐️ paragraphs are good, but punctuation could be better.

Grammar: ⭐️ some issues, but meaning is clear.

Vocabulary: ⭐️ suitable for B1.

I would give you a Grade 2! There is big problem with racism but to be honest I never had problem with people here.

Do you remamber my old sofa? We had to buy a new one because the leather on it got ripped during the move. I am sorry that I didnt write earlier, I have been really busy lately, because of our family moving.

This year we are moving to Bridgetown in Barbados, 2 blocks away from your house.

I think this island is very beautiful, the nature there is amazing, also the ocean of course.

Shops are near to my house, because we are moving to the centre and the people are very friendly here.

Hi David,

How have you been? I hope you are good. Thanks for your last email. Sorry I haven't been in touch with you for a while, but I've been busy. I thought I'd hit you up and tell you what I've been doing recently.

For me everything is good. I actually moved to Poland. In Poland everything is cheaper, especially alcohol and most importantly vodka. Here everybody drinks it and they're very friendly and kind. One thing I would change is the sheer amount of rainbow people, there's just too many of them and they're disturbing my wellbeing.

While I was still moving, this one night happened. I decided to go to a pub and I met some nice guys, we had a few beers and decided to go outside. After we went outside one of the guys tripped and fell into an open canal.

I was thinking whether maybe I could stay a night at your place sometime, because I kinda miss hanging out with you. If possible I could come over anytime next week, if you find the time, hit me up.

All the best, John

Thanks for sharing your writing — it’s clear you’ve made an effort to write a personal, informal email. Below is a full evaluation based on the Maturita and Cambridge exam standards.

---

✅ Evaluation Summary

✍️ Content (Maturita / Cambridge: 5 marks)

Maturita Grade: 3/5

Cambridge Level: B1/B2 (First) – borderline pass

You cover the basic points: personal update, experience, and a suggestion to meet.

However, one part contains inappropriate content ("rainbow people") which would be marked as discriminatory or offensive, especially in formal exams. This would significantly affect your score, possibly even leading to disqualification in Cambridge exams due to breach of conduct.

The email starts and ends appropriately, but the tone shifts unexpectedly.

---

🧱 Organization (5 marks)

Score: 3/5

The message is organized into clear paragraphs, which is good.

The structure is mostly logical: greeting → personal update → story → suggestion → closing.

Some transitions between ideas are a bit abrupt (e.g., the jump from vodka to people to the pub story).

More cohesive devices (e.g., “Anyway,” “By the way,” “Speaking of that…”) would help smoothen the flow.

---

🧾 Grammar (5 marks)

Score: 3/5

You generally use understandable grammar, but there are several issues:

Examples of mistakes:

“I hope you are good” → “I hope you’re doing well” (more natural)

“I thought I'd hit you up” → too informal for Maturita/Cambridge; try “I thought I’d drop you a line”

“One night happened” → “One night something interesting happened” or “This one night stands out”

“decided to go outside. After we went outside” → repetitive. Better: “…so we decided to go outside, where…”

---

💬 Vocabulary (5 marks)

Score: 3/5

Some informal expressions are too casual or slangy for an exam:

“Hit you up” → informal; use “get in touch” or “contact you”

“Kinda” → very informal; use “kind of” or better yet, “I miss spending time with you”

“Rainbow people” – inappropriate and potentially offensive; this would penalize your score heavily.

---

✨ Style (5 marks)

Score: 2/5

Your style starts friendly and informal — which is okay for a personal email — but some parts go beyond “informal” into sloppy or inappropriate.

There’s also a lack of sensitivity in the tone, which goes against the communicative and respectful tone expected in exams.

---

📊 Total Score (Maturita scale)

Content: 3

Organization: 3

Grammar: 3

Vocabulary: 3

Style: 2

➡️ Final Maturita Grade: 3 (Dobrý / Good)

(Potentially lower due to the offensive content.)

---

📚 Corrections and Suggested Rewrite

Here’s a cleaned-up, exam-appropriate version:

---

Subject: Greetings from Poland!

Hi David,

How have you been? I hope you're doing well. Thanks for your last email, and sorry I haven’t been in touch — things have been pretty busy lately. I just wanted to update you on what I’ve been up to recently.

Everything is going fine on my end. I actually moved to Poland! Things are much cheaper here, especially food and drinks. People are generally friendly and welcoming, which has made the transition easier.

One funny thing happened while I was still settling in. I went to a local pub and met some nice guys. We had a few beers and then decided to go for a walk. Unfortunately, one of the guys tripped and fell into an open canal! Luckily, he was okay, but it was quite a moment.

I was wondering if I could stay at your place for a night sometime. I really miss hanging out with you. I’m free next week, so if you have time, let me know.

Take care,

John

---

🔍 Tips for Improvement

1. Avoid slang and overly casual expressions in formal writing (e.g., “hit you up,” “kinda”).

2. Be culturally sensitive and inclusive — avoid negative references to groups of people.

3. Use better connectors between ideas: instead of “this one night happened,” say “One evening stands out.”

4. Expand your vocabulary by reading informal articles, personal blogs, and letters to see how tone is managed.

5. Stick to the purpose — try to stay focused on what the task asks, and don’t drift into unrelated or risky comments.

---

🏁 Cambridge Exam Evaluation

Depending on the version:

B1 Preliminary (PET): Pass, but borderline. Needs more accurate grammar and appropriate tone.

B2 First (FCE): Below passing standard due to tone, grammar slips, and especially inappropriate vocabulary.

C1 Advanced: Not acceptable — inappropriate language, i

nformal tone, and a lack of precision.

---

Let me know if you'd like to practice a similar writing task or rewrite your email with different content!
