The 15th Amendment allowed African-Americans to be a part of politics. Among these men is the first African-American senator Hiram Revels an without the 15th amendment that would have never happened. First of all before the 15th amendment African-Americans couldn't even vote much less help change the country they live in by being a senator of Mississippi. The others in the picture were representatives.

The military reconstruction act was a law that stated that the south would be divided into three military zones, and the military would enforce the laws. This happened because the 14th and 15th amendments saying that African-Americans had to be treated equally to whites and could vote were not being upheld by the local law enforcement. Southerners hated this because it took away their ability to take away African-Americans rights.

I am an African-American share cropper and I can definitely say that things have changed since the war. I can't decide whether it's good or bad because for one I am no longer a slave but I still can't make enough money to survive so I am forced into share cropping which I can't get out of. Even though the laws are in effect and we can't be legally treated as slaves the rich southerners still treat us as if we were dirt. So its almost the same as slavery maybe a little better.

The U.S Congress has decided that in exchange for the allowance of republican party candidate Rutherford B. Hayes to be president the U.s army would no longer stay in the south and the local law enforcement would take back control. When this happened the local law enforcement went back to treating African-Americans terrible. This killed all of the progress that African-Americans had made and brought them to the point where it was almost exactly like being a slave again.

Was Reconstruction a Success or Failure

I think that reconstruction was a failure. My reasons for this are for one African-Americans only had a few years where they were somewhat treated as equals then it went right back to the way it was. yes Reconstruction did get all of the states readmitted and in Lincoln or Johnson's eyes that is a success but i feel it needed more than that.

Some more reasons why reconstruction wasn't a success are. African-Americans and some whites were still stuck in poverty being in poverty made it not much different from slavery because you had to go work for some body on their farm and if you wanted to survive you had to do it year after year. The last reason why reconstruction wasn't a success is the republican party reversed all of the progress they had made just to get their president in office.
