The WTO has six main goals: to establish and enforce international trade rules, to provide a forum for negotiating and monitoring further trade liberalization, to resolve trade disputes, to improve the transparency of decision-making processes, to collaborate with other major international economic institutions involved in global economic management, and to assist developing countries in fully benefiting from global economic management.

The World Bank has five key objectives: To provide member countries with long-term finance for economic restoration and development. To encourage long-term capital investment in order to maintain BoP balance and a balanced development of international commerce. To offer financial backing for loans to small and big businesses, as well as other projects in member countries. To assure the implementation of development projects in order to facilitate the transition from a war-time to a peace-time economy, as well as to encourage capital investment in member countries.

The IMF has three primary responsibilities: economic development, lending, and capacity building. The IMF analyzes trends that influence member economies as well as the global economy as a whole through economic surveillance. The IMF provides loans to its member countries that are experiencing balance-of-payments challenges in order to help them strengthen their economies. Through its many technical support initiatives, the organization also provides help, policy advice, and training.

The World Bank provides concessional development credits, grants, and guarantees to support countries' efforts to promote economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve the living conditions of the poor. On August 4th of 2017, the World Bank issued catastrophe bonds that will provide Mexico with up to US$360 million in financial protection against losses from earthquakes and tropical cyclones. The bonds were issued in three different structures to provide coverage for three types of disasters: earthquakes, hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean, and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. In the event of a covered natural disaster, part or all of the issued amount of the bonds will be made available to the Natural Disaster Fund (FONDEN).
The bonds were issued under the IBRD's "Capital at Risk" issuance program, created in 2014. One of the objectives of this program is to transfer risks related to natural disasters or pandemics from developing countries to the capital markets.
