I picked this topic because I think freedom of speech is really important. It doesn’t seem fair if people can’t fully share their opinions, even if it’s happening indirectly. This is an example of injustice because it can limit what people are allowed to say online.

I chose this article because it highlights resistance. People everyday have been organizing together, communities have created rapid-response networks to warn others about ICE activity. Activists have used social media to document abuses, and people have organized nonviolent protests and demonstrations. The fact that people are using their voices, technology, and collective action to fight injustice is why I chose this article. I'm proud of what we've been doing. But this article also warns that immigration crackdowns are still happening and the government is still pushing policies like mass deportations. The problem isn't over yet.

In her 20 page rebuttal, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson stated ""Freed Blacks fought for the shared humanity of all people. And the Great Emancipator eventually foresaw that the only path forward that could prevent a return — in any form — to slavery and race-based subordination was to link the fates of all,"

I feel this statement and the ruling of the court strongly implies the original authors of the 14th amendment did not necessarily have race in mind when they wrote the amendment. During this period there were Chinese immigrants working on railroads and Irish immigrants working as indentured servants to name a few. If the intention was only to give the descendants of African slaves citizenship, would they have not written this specifically into the law?

Summary: I chose this article because it shows that many people are speaking up for fair treatment of immigrants. People are using peaceful protests and community events to ask for justice and equal rights. I think this is important because it reminds us that people can work together to create positive change and stand up against injustice.
