Track 17 at the Grunewald Train Station was the main station where about 55,000 Berlin Jews were deported primarily to Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. There were steel plates on the ground that showed every date where the Berlin Jews would get deported, the number and where they were sent. I found that even as the war was being lost Jews got deported. (The last deportation date was dated, March 27, 1945).

The Grunewald station was used for the mass deportations of Jews during the Holocaust. They had transported Jews from Berlin to different ghettos and death camps to the East. The number of Jews per train ranged from the smallest at 18 people to the largest transport of 1,800 people.

The Grunewald train tracks was where the Jews were deported to extermination camps, after the Germans would use polite, sweet language to persuade them to get on the trains. Little did the Jews know, they would be on their way to inevitable death. When walking next to the tracks, I noticed that my feet would temporarily get caught in the metal holes, but I was still able to move forward. I’m not sure if the designer of the memorial purposely made it so this would happen, but to me this represented that Germany’s past would always be remembered, tripped over, but we can still move forward.

At the Grunewald train station on track 17 you can see the memorial of all the deportations that took place. From October 18, 1941 to March 27, 1945. 50,282 innocent Jews were shipped off to various ghettos and death camps. The thing that struck me was the last deportations in 1945, because even when the Nazis knew that they could not win the war and it was impossible for them to finish their “Final Solution” they still sent innocent men, women, and children to their death for no reason other than their religion.

I have learned about it in class and have done various assignments involving the Nuremberg Laws, and I figured it would be a bigger tourist attraction than it actually was. It turned out to be a normal section of the city with stores, schools, and apartments.

In the Bavarian Quarter, an elementary school was found a few blocks away from the memorial to the Nuremberg Laws. In the courtyard of the school, a brick wall stood with different names, different dates, and different years. Kids in the sixth grade are assigned to research and dedicate a brick to their chosen person in order to remember the Jews from their neighborhood who were lost during a horrific time. The students take pride in their research and are extremely eager to share their findings.

When we went to the Wannsee Conference Villa, Mr. B said something that really struck me: when the Nazis first started sending the Jewish people to death camps, they only stayed there for 2-3 hours on average. This is not because they were permitted to leave, but because they were murdered. I always thought the Nazis used these camps to not only kill, but for forced labor as well, even from the beginning. Both of these methods were horrific and I find it very troubling to know that many defenseless and innocent Jewish people had no chance to survive.

It was interesting that the games challenged Nazi ideology. It would be challenged if in a competition, the “superior race” was beaten by someone who wasn’t Aryan or who was Jewish. That happened with Jesse Owens winning the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4x100m relay, effectively crushing Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy.

In the memorial there was a plaque for each day that Jews were sent on trains to the east. I noticed that in the early and late days of deportation that Jews were not being sent to death camps, but to ghettos, and I thought that was very interesting.
