 I sat this is the theme because the two main characters, Marie-Laure and Werner both face their own hardships during World War 2, Marie-L was a blind French girl who lost her father during the war left with a priceless jewel to fend for herself in an unknown place. And Werner a Hitler youth who dreamed of being more than a German worker, he had to struggle with the lifestyle that he didn't agree with and trying ti protect his family while going along with the Germans wishes.
