Based on a true story, this is the tale of two survivors in Sudan. Nya walks to the pond, her family's only source of water, two hours a way - twice a day. Salva walks the continent looking for a safe place for his family to live. These two strangers meet and share their stories with the world.
Discussion Questions: What might it be like if you didn't have clean water? Why are these children responsible for taking care of the family?
Activity: Take students to the school track to walk one mile. After walking one mile, consider that Salva walked over 1,800 miles. Students can then track Salva's journey on a map.

Emmanuel was born in Ghana with one leg. Many people disregard him because of this. He has to ride his bike often to get to school and care for his family. He becomes a cyclist, and organizes an over 400 mile bike ride across Ghana to show people that disability does not mean unable.
Discussion Questions: How do people treat Emmanuel in the beginning of the story compared to the end? Why does Emmanuel value how others see disability?
Activity: Watch the video of Emmanuel explaining his story. How does hearing the story in his own words differ from the text?

As a class, agree upon an issue or idea in the school or community that students feel needs to be addressed. Research the topic, and how to educate the community, and what they can do to help. Create a class project to benefit your idea, such as a fundraiser or food drive. For example: If the school or community has a large homeless population, students may create an online fundraiser to educate and raise money for the local establishments that aid the homeless, such as soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Students could also initiate a food or clothing drive within the school.
