On the quiz I took, I was listed at a 45% Visual learner with 40% Auditory. I consider myself a combination of both things. When I want to remember something or even when studying, I always studied by reading things aloud to myself so I can hear it. However, when I need to put something together, I always search a quick video on Youtube with a step by step tutorial! As I teach, I always try to incorporate videos from Youtube, visuals (PowerPoints, PDFs, etc.). After completing the quiz, it stated that I was 40% Auditory, 20% Visual and 40% Tactile. I consider this to be very accurate! I consider myself mostly an auditory learner. I have always studied by repeating things or even reading chapters out loud. I even listen to podcasts daily. I enjoy crafting and making things in my free time. My favorite season is fall and I  love spending time with my family. I love traveling and try to do it as much as possible.

The self assessment results were pretty true to me with Auditory: 40% Visual: 45% Tactile: 15%. I am definitely a visual learner and benefit from watching videos or presentations to learn content. One statement it listed is "color code things" and that really stuck out to me.. on my calendar I use different colored markers to categorize notes and everything going on in life to make sense and have a sense of organization. I always try to incorporate some form of video or pictures for my students as well as text. My students love playing games so whatever we are learning about in class, I try to make it into a fun game.

The self-assessment said I was 40% Auditory, 10% Visual, and 50% Tactile. I'm honestly shocked Visual is not higher and Auditory is not lower, as I prefer visual over auditory. The Tactile one does not surprise me, as I prefer the hands-on learning and learn the best with a tactile environment. In seeing how we all have a mixture of the three, it is important to make sure all three learning styles are incorporated and being met within the classroom.

When I heard of Culturally Responsive Teaching, I hear the words "culture" and know that it is important to embrace the different cultures within your classroom. 

I do want to share how I absolutely LOVE giraffes, they are the cutest animal. Back in November, my friends and I visited Colorado for the weekend to surprise our friend who was pregnant. I have always known I was a visual learner. I am surprised I am not more tactile than auditory even though they are close in percentages. Usually, when I see the task, I usually try to replicate it to see if this is possible. I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together again.

Culturally Responsive Teaching to me involves being able to communicate and adapt to environments that are unlike ourselves. I was surprised to see that I scored the highest in Tactile learning as I typically thought of myself as a visual learner. 

To me culturally responsive teaching means being mindful in what you teach within your classroom. It is important to make sure to embrace different cultures and learning styles and take into consideration that every student is an individual and learns in their own unique way.

Being culturally responsive is very important to me personally, but even more so in my job as principal. Being a member of a 95% white faculty in a school with 95% African American students is not something that escapes me. I want to learn as much as I can so that we do not let our biases(known or unknown) affect our students in a negative way. I want them to learn, grow and be the best they can be!]]> 2021-01-14 03:03:36 UTC https://padlet.com/drmclaughlin/edu505intro/wish/1085640247 Strategies dnabarbbrennan https://padlet.com/drmclaughlin/edu505intro/wish/1085674898 I am a visual learner, but I also scored in both tactile and auditory and because of that, I find myself incorporating a variety of methods.  What I will pay more attention to is using a variety within each lesson.  I think some subjects lend themselves to hands on activities, like math and science.  I need to make sure that my instruction addresses each style more regularly.  There has been a movement toward giving students options in how they show their learning.  That was not my experience in school, but I think it's a great opportunity for kids to thrive.  It makes me think about a 5th grader that I had who wasn't a strong writer. She chose to do a "How to give a facial" presentation instead of writing a how to essay.  She was awesome and every kid in the class payed attention, even the boys, because she was in her realm and did a dynamic presentation. 
 I also related to the video where Identity charts were used in the SS classroom.  Students collaborated and shared personal experiences of characters and the teacher related that to the character's cultural experiences.  Students can begin to learn that our environment, family and culture helps to form who we are.
One strategy that I think is great to utilize is real life connection.  Students who learn about injustice can make a plan and put it into motion through community outreach.  Then students have learned through experience and will hopefully carry that out into the world!]]> 2021-01-14 03:31:34 UTC https://padlet.com/drmclaughlin/edu505intro/wish/1085674898 Stacy Emberger https://padlet.com/drmclaughlin/edu505intro/wish/1087985097 I am Stacy Emberger.  I am the mother of four beautiful children, three sons and the youngest a daughter.  I enjoy traveling (my husband was in the Army for 30 years), cooking and reading.  I really love teaching, and I have begun a new placement this year in high school.  I am an auditory learner, according to the assessment, and I am not surprised.  I love to talk, to meet new people and just having conversation.  I was the student who was perpetually moved for talking in school, but it did not seem to matter where I was moved, I would talk to anyone.  I have learned that it IS how I learn.

Engaging students with different learning styles should be easy for teachers to do if they know and understand the differences.  Kinesthetic learners need to “do” to learn.  Having students’ practice, model and demonstrate are all active ways to engage kinesthetic learners.  Using a hands-on approach with these learners works best, according to the video on Teaching to Different Learning Styles.

I am not very surprised my highest score is in visual because that is my strongest way to get information for anything I do. I like to incorporate that in my teaching as well. As for my tactile I am some what surprised why it is very low I do like to physically try things out and learn more than just listening. For my students I try to hit all areas which is so easy to do with math which I love! It gives students more ways to explore.


Culturally responsive teaching makes me think about diversity, culture, and color. I always want my students to respect others culture, show how we are all different and the same, and love yourself and what you look like.

I am also very involved in youth sports, I currently coach High School Girls basketball in NJ as well as run my own AAU team for a boys program as well. In addition to that, I am a former college basketball coach. I love to travel, cook and experience new things. I love making people laugh and just being the life of the party.

Which is a little surprising because I always thought as myself as a Visual learner.   

When I think of Culturally Responsive Teaching, I think of culture and being intune with your students and what's occurring in the current area that you teach in. For example, If you are teaching a lesson on, social justice reform, we would want to touch on key topics, points, and figures that students can relate too. We would also want to present the subject matter in a way that our students can relate. Maybe play some music, or show a video to relate the culture that we are talking about to the culture that they are thinking.
