However the formal declaration of the end to the war occurred 16 months later, as confederate armies surrendered all over the country.
(Amnesty or armistice)

War started to end two weeks prior to Appomattox with Lee attacking Fort Stedman near Petersburg, Virginia. Grant counterattacked a week later at Five Forks, forcing Lee to abandon Richmond & Petersburg, Virginia.

Confederate army retreated along Richmond and Danville Railroad. Lee was outnumbered and low on supplies, however Confederate troops marched all night hoping to reach supply trains in Farmville, Virginia and eventually join Johnston's army in NC. However Union troops captured the supplies at Farmville.

The next day confederates discovered their army was blocked by Union cavalry. Union troops and corps ultimately blocked Lee and forced Confederates back.

Lee decided to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. A formal meeting between Lee and Grant took place at the courthouse.

Question: Why do you think the end of the war was a process?
