She is very self reliant because she does what she thinks is right even if others find it weird. This would make her a "nonconformist." She also puts her heart into what she likes and is "relieved and gay when [she] has done [her] best." Fiona is also very in touch with nature and natural things which allows her to separate from societal norms, allowing her to make her own decisions that are not influenced by others.

A song that reflects the message of self reliance like that expressed in this essay is "Who Says" by Selena Gomez. In this song, Gomez says "But when it comes to me, I wouldn't wanna be anybody else." This reflects the quote "he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion." Through her lyric, Gomez shows that she has fully accepted herself and no matter what society says, she will not change because she is happy with herself. This is the central claim made in the song, the idea that you have to be happy with yourself and ignore what society says about you. This is also a claim made by Emerson in his essay.

Another example of someone who was great but misunderstood is Albert Einstein. Because he had Asperger syndrome, he had a different thinking process than other students his age. He was viewed as weird by students. He was also not the best student, making people think he was not smart. He went on to become a famous scientist and mathematician, proving that being different doesn't mean you are not capable of doing the things that you want to do

It shows that it is important to stand out from the crowd and express your individuality.

Ethos - "We are now men...members." In this section Emerson says 'we' and 'us.' This allows him to convey to readers that he feels the same things they do and is not much different from them, but he chooses to not listen to the voices of society.

Logos - "Pythagoras was misunderstood...great is to be misunderstood." Emerson lists many people that were misunderstood. By providing this fact, he is able to further convey his message. It helps readers to understand that although someone may be misunderstood for being different, it is not necessarily a bad thing.

Pathos - "There is a time in every man's education...no hope." In this section, Emerson evokes a sense of content and individuality within his readers. He reassures that it is okay to be your own person and society often forgets that. This allows him to convey his overall message of self reliance and nonconformity.
