I can infer that people came to Singapore because of unrest back home. Source B mentions 'The weak clan was always bullied by the strong clan.' This tells me that the weak clan struggled as they were not able to live peacefully due to always being bullied by the strong clan. Thus, they came to Singapore to escape from unrest back in their homeland.
:)

People came to colonial Singapore before World War 2 as they wanted to seek a peaceful life in Singapore. The source mentioned 'The Chinese society in the past was divided into strong and weak clans.' and 'There was nothing we could do.' Since they were divided into different clans, war would break out more frequently and the weaker clans would always be defeated. The weak clan had no chance against the strong clan. Thus, to escape the wars and the violence, they came to Singapore to live peacefully. :/

I can infer that people came to colonial Singapore because they suffered from famine in their homeland. Source A says "We could not grow crops", and "We survived on plain porridge made of sweet potato". Thus, if they cannot grow crops, they would not have enough food to feed themselves. This situation is known as famine. With famine back home, the people were suffering and hence, left their countries to come to Singapore to escape famine.

I can infer from Source C that people came to Colonial Singapore before WW2 as there was a need for cheap labour in Singapore. Source C mentions, “these convicts built roads and well-known landmarks.” I can tell that convicts were banished due to the need to build roads and landmarks in Singapore. Labour from convicts was the cheapest, thus cheap labour was needed in Singapore.

Source D mentions 'still, this never gave us the same income as our village-mates who returned from Singapore', 'they came back wearing splendid clothes ,and they also bought presents back from Singapore .' this shows that in Bawean, people were earning very little back in their homeland, as compared to those who came to work in Singapore. thus many would want to earn more money in Singapore to support their families back in their hometown thus, coming to Singapore.

People came to colonial Singapore before World War Two to escape from a life of poverty. Source A mentions that ‘life in my village is poor’ This shows that since they were poor, they would have struggled to survive on a daily basis. This might have driven people away in search of a better life. Thus people left their homeland and came to colonial Singapore. 😭

People came to colonial singapore before world war 2 as people there had suffered a famine. The passage states that "we survived on a thin porridge made of sweet potatoes.occasionally we added rice morsels to it " and " we did not have sufficent rice so we added a few grains to the sweet potato gruel ". This tells me that people who left china in 1937 were starving and had no enough food to survive. Even so, they tried consuming on sweet potato to survive, thus the people come to singapore to escape the famine and to lead a healthier and better life.😀😗
