Coming right out of college, these idea, videos, and articles are a great start for a new teacher to have for resources. With data so important , these are some great programs to assist with this. Every year we usually track reading levels (for growth) and sight words (for mastery) and we store this in a student data notebook. I did not know until now, that it was considered Student Managed Learning. *A goal with a plan is just a wish.  As teachers we need to teach students to set action steps for their goals.  Just as many adults need accountabiltiy partners, so do students. I was amazed to know there are apps to help with that!  I specifically liked the apps Habit List & Balanced for helping students be balanced individuals.


Data Notebooks certainly are useful tools for students especially when graphics are included & when the data notebooks are used in student-led conferences.

Flexible Learning Environments including flexible seating & virtual schools really make students more comfortable, less stressed, and thus more ready to learn!

I love the flexible order of learning as a part of student choice & want to do that more often. 

Here's a question I have: If there is no set length of time to master tasks or complete self-paced learning,  how does a teacher monitor progress and determine if students are learning enough in a given amount of time? 

To wrap this up:  Student managed learning empowers students presently and best prepares them for the future.

Even though we have PowerSchool, many students seem completely clueless as to how they're doing in class (especially the ones with lower grades). It would be helpful to have the students use a proficiency chart throughout a unit to help them track their grades and understanding of the unit. I have periodic graded notebook checks to incentivize students to keep their materials organized, so I could include this in that and require it to be kept up with. One things that I would like to use in my classroom would be the Pathways. It is similar to choice boards but it allows students to track their learning. Shifting the ownership to the students allows them to see where they are and where they need to work towards. I really feel like I will have my students have a data notebook. With that being said when a student is able to track their learning, reflect on assignments, and share what they are leaning, the student is going to be successful in more ways then they can imagine. They are learning the content, responsibility, and self awareness. All of those things are important and if a student can recognize their growth or when they need assistance then this will help them grow as individual. As a Special Education Teacher it is important that my students use Data Notebooks. My students used Data Notebooks for tests and quizzes. Students were able to compare there tests and quiz grades which determine what goal they needed to work, such as reading comprehension or vocabulary. I also use I-ready which gives you the assessment areas they need to work on. This data helps with writing there Present Level of Performance on a Individual Education Plan (IEP). I plan to implement the technology tool no red ink.
