Storchay, Oksana. “Myhailo Vrubel Kyiv Creative Period: Sacred Art and Canon Problem.” DOAJ, KNUKiM Publishing Centre, 1 Dec. 2019, doaj.org/article/b9ac87ec2ddc4e04836bdf7842d5491c.

This article written by Oksana Storchay concerns the development of the style and content of Mikhail Vrubel’s work as part of European Art Nouveau. Vrubel worked primarily on themes traditional for Russia and the Russian Empire, which included folklore stories, fairy tales and religious motifs popular in this country. This reading is important for my research as it reveals the path of development of Vrubel’s work and his understanding of both religious canons, traced in many of his paintings, and the influence of fundamental art on him, namely, tracing the artist’s deep understanding of Byzantine and Old Russian art, ancient iconography and traditional color palette. All this will later leave an imprint on his work and this article reveals his development during the period of monumental painting of the “Kyiv period”.

The author reflects on the content and plots of the paintings, how they changed from religious to demonic and from demonic fairy tales and how they were influenced by events in the author’s life. Especially important are comments regarding the author's unique style, which developed from his work with Byzantine mosaics and was later repeated on his canvases.

The State Russian Museum, Monarda Arts, 24 Jan. 2015, http://digital.films.com.ezproxy.trincoll.edu/p_ViewVideo.aspx?xtid=59203

(Your need to be on campus to access the resource)

This short documentary film focuses on one of Mikhail Vrubel's less popular works, Six-Winged Seraph, and reveals some important details about the artist's life and work. This painting was painted during the author’s stay in a mental hospital, which is the end of his life and shows the progression of the artist’s illness. In addition, many details of his studies and life are mentioned, namely, the author’s participation in the theatrical life of Russian ballet and the influence of his wife, an opera singer, on the author’s work. Despite the dark and sad component, this period of the author’s life produced many of his significant paintings, revealing the deep-eyed torment of the human soul and reminding viewers and the artistic background of Vrubel.

Soviet artist, 1991 (the photo is taken by me)

This book, found in the Trinity College library, is an abridged version of the publication of three books by art historian Peter Suzdalev dedicated to the unity of his personal and historical-artistic background and significance. This book is the core of my research, as it covers the most significant moments in the study of Vrubel’s life and work - personality, psychological illness, the influence of theater, opera and the works of the Russian poet Lermontov on his work; as well as how the historical context of his artistic practice influenced artist's styles and methods. This is a multifaceted work that combines a review of his biography and an analysis of Vrubel’s art, giving a complete context for the development and formation of this artist.

In the world of Russian art history, the question of the influence of Vrubel’s illness and his life’s tragedies on his paintings has long been raised, and this work provides a full overview of the features of his medical background. This article is more of a scientific nature than art history, but with a more detailed detailed study, this information could be useful for understanding and analyzing Vrubel's works.
