Important information is converted to long term memory while unimportant info is left in short term memory and thrown out while you are sleeping.

I still remember my fifth birthday party and a lot of memories from being 6, but I can't really remember much else before I was 9. I remember age 6 more because I was under a lot of mental stress while my dad was in the hospital.
The importance of the memory impacts how long it will last.
When the brain needs space, it clears whatever is available that it deems unnecessary.
