The ideas around learning and being mindful align with the work we are doing in our district around Conscious Discipline. It's an adult focused approach to considering how we enter challenging situations with students. That we must be regulated as adults, before we can help students learn to regulate. Also, that behavior is the result of a lagging skill. It's about leading through our own strengths, and not through invoking fear in students in order to MAKE them behave.

I feel that I learned about being mindful and being present to help make clearheaded decisions. Meditation is a great way to practice being mindful and having control of our emotions. Learning experiences are accompanied by emotions. I am very excited to learn more about Mind the Gap. I think it is a great way to share with staff on the importance of failure. I think failure is one of the best ways to learn. It's important to never give up on your goal and keep trying. I also want to implement time and energy management strategies. Being a mom, an administrator, a wife and a student is a full time job of managing time. I am going to implement those strategies into my life to help me manage my time better.
I am going to implement more play and creativity activities in our staff meetings to help with ideas, happiness and resilient.

I found interesting when a trigger incident occurs you can go down one of two paths, habitual and the one of mindfulness. I've been working on taking the mindfulness one. When an incident occurs, I pause, think about why it triggered a reaction, take a deep breathe to clear my head, and finally respond. By doing this, I've realized I've been calmer, and I don't mad as easily.
I also learned that meditation is more than just sitting and chanting like you see in the movies. It could be something like taking 5 minutes to just do something you like such as read a non-school related book or just sitting outside people watching. This can also be a form of play. Everyday after school, I've been trying to give myself 30 minutes to do something just for fun. I either color, read, or watch an episode of one of my shows.
Lastly, I struggle with time management. I found the Time and Energy Management Strategies (pg. 236-238) to be helpful. I took the "make to-do list" strategy and turned it into a checklist. This helped me see every assignment I needed to do at a glance. It also motivated me because every time I checked something off I felt a sense of accomplishment. I felt I can do this!

In the first few years of teaching I have seen how having a great mentor can help a teacher grow in their teaching and maintain a good work/life balance. It's been an important part of my life to take time to process emotions and be silent so when I enter situations I am able to react in the proper way.
This section also was a great reminder of the need for growth and how it's a constant process that's necessary to keep growing as a person and as a teacher.
