It occurs naturally in the soil and affects domestic and wild animals. People can get sick with anthrax if they come into contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products by consuming, breathing in the spores, or getting the spores in a cut in the skin. People in certain occupations such as veterinarians, farmers, livestock producers, and others that handle animals or animal products have an increased risk of exposure. Symptoms depend on the route of infection. They can range from skin ulcers with a dark scab to difficulty breathing, fever, chills, chest discomfort, cough, nausea, and drenching sweats. To prevent anthrax, there is a vaccine, but only people that are high risk due to their jobs are recommended to take it. Other ways to prevent catching anthrax are a properly-fitted face mask, eye protection, and protective gloves.
