Lachlan: there are some 'core' tools that seem to come up over and over again in workflows because they're established and well supported, such as Teracopy, Jhove and DROID. Perhaps the most important thing in all this is to evaluate the tool against the gap in your workflow and be able to justify it's use. Richard Lehane did this really nicely in his Siegfried demo when he was talking about the distinctions between Fido, DROID and SF.
