His innovation reduced the time it took to build a car from more than 12 hours to one hour and 33 minutes. Inspired by the continuous-flow production methods used by flour mills, breweries, canneries and industrial bakeries, along with the disassembly of animal carcasses in Chicago’s meat-packing plants, Ford installed moving lines for bits and pieces of the manufacturing process: For instance, workers built motors and transmissions on rope-and-pulley–powered conveyor belts. Fashioned from vanadium alloy steel, it offered superior strength despite its light weight. It also featured a generous ground clearance that could take the worst roads, which made it particularly enticing to rural drivers.” (history.com). Ford was overrun with orders. As a result, he put into practice techniques of mass production that would revolutionize American industry, including the use of large production plants. Standardized, interchangeable parts, and the moving assembly line. Mass production significantly cut down on the time required to produce an automobile, which allowed costs to stay low. In 1914, Ford also increased the daily wage for an eight hour day for his workers to $5. This was a little more than double what they made earlier. It was $2.34 for nine hours. Thanks to the wage raise, Ford began setting a standard for the industry. By 1927, the company had produced about 15 million Model T’s, making Ford Motor Company the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
