Russia and the US were both unfit in themselves to participate in the cold war. Russia equipped China, who equipped Vietnam, to fight against America. In 1954, Vietnam voted to be divided into North and South Vietnam. The leader of South Vietnam was catholic, and communism despised religion. Therefore, he hated Russia and a nautral ally to the US became South Vietnam.
