Circuit switching – the traditional phone network connects calls using circuit switching; this is where a call between two people maintains a switched connection between them for the duration of a call.

Packet switching – data networks, such as the Internet, use packet switching rather than circuit switching as it is a more efficient method of communication. Packet switching is where data is divided into a series of small blocks and routed through a series of paths rather than sending the data over one dedicated line.

Facebook has recently introduced a VoIP application for sending voice and video calls from its messenger application using iOS and Android devices. 


Skype
Skype is another popular VoIP application to make use of voice and video calling. The process involves:
  • Initially the user must download and install the Skype software
  • Then create a username and password
  • Next step is to add Skype contact details for colleagues, friends and family
  • Then to make Skype-to-Skype calls, log in to the system, select a contact and choose the call option; this is normally a free service
  • To make Skype-to-phone calls, log in into the system, enter the number you wish to call including the international codes and choose the call option; these calls are normally charged per minute
