The extent of how our bodies have been regulated by culture has increased with more options for hair removal treatments than ever before. From temporary to permeant solutions for every skin type and hair colour.

The trends in grooming of pubic hair has had a lot of attention in women's magazines of the past decade. Increasingly women are choosing to go hair free compared to the natural alternative. Could this be just another way that the beauty industry is trying to make a profit and control beauty ideals? Or is it a step forward in how we can control and manipulate our bodies through the products that are now available to us.

Why has this push for hairless skin been embraced by women all over the world? It could be that it has be adopted as part of what it is to be a good female citizen in modern society. That to be female and feminine you have the choice to be hair free or well groomed. As well as an array of other grooming practices that already exist, being hairless has become another common routine we increasingly engage in especially in summer.

There are many different ways that we try to control and change our bodies to align with cultural norms and standards

In society, there is a close relationship between the body and the mind or self-identity. The images of what people see and how others are perceived by society governs how others interact with them. For example, by following social norms you would be well groomed, well dressed and brush your teeth. In contrast, someone that does not put effort into their appearance and does not follow normal hygiene practices is violating the social norm.

The body is regulated by culture and social norms, this puts pressure on us to behave in certain ways. We exercise intimate and immediate control over our bodies as control from other such as the State has been replaced with self-control. Therefore, living in modern society means we will always be entangled in the conflict between the self and the body.
