Their belief was that everyone was born a sinner at birth, and not anything that they do later in life. Along with this idea, they believed it was who was determined to go to heaven or hell. They become accepted when they have a moment of "grace" where they are presented with a connection that is strong between the religion and the person. Calvinism was in the United States, and the Puritan's that inhabited the land did share some beliefs with Calvinism, but not all. One belief of Calvinism included  the authority and sufficiency of Scripture for one to know God and one's duties to God and one's neighbor. The Calvinism beliefs filled people with fear from things such as witches and Satan. The Salem Witch Trials were trials where women were getting accused of being witches. There are still lots of controversies that go on about what was spoken in these trials, and if they were true or not, but there has been some evidence of these trials possibly being completely true. Out of all the people accused, nineteen men and women were hanged, and many were put in prison. The Puritans did not like how the Catholic church was in England, so they went overseas to America to create a very pure in relation to the Bible and God. Puritan's created the idea of theocracy, which is where the priests rule in the name of God. The Puritan culture is what shaped the American culture of what it is today.
