Reducing waste would mean less greenhouse gas emissions.

Waste, especially food waste is a major contributor to the total greenhouse gas emissions each year. Food waste and organic do the most damage when sent to landfill. The waste is free to breakdown into methane which is 3 times more potent in our atmosphere than CO2.

Reducing our waste would protect the food chain.

Waste we carelessly dispose of makes it’s way into widelife ecosystems, where it is the new ingested by animals and makes its way up the food chain and eventually on to our plates. Plastics and other non-organic waste is most dangerous when it breaks down into it’s chemical conponments or micro plastics. These chemicals or microplastics can be ingested by animals very low in the food chain. Animals as small as krill have been found to ingest microplastics by mistake. Krill is then eaten by fish that we eat and the microplastics and toxins can be ingested by us.

Less resources wasted

We buy and throw out too many things that we can recycle, or use again. The average person buys 60 percent more items of clothing every year and keeps them for about half as long as 15 years ago when nearly all textiles and clothing can be recycled. We don’t think about the resources these products take and how much we are really throwing out.

For example
Australians throw out 6 tons of textile and clothing every ten minutes.
Globally, an average of almost 10,000 litres of water is necessary to produce 1 kilogram of cotton fabric, with approximately 2,500 litres needed for a standard 250 gram cotton t-shirt. That means if around 30% of textiles contain cotton. Over 180,000 litres of water are wasted by Australians throwing out clothing every 10 mins.
