  • Robert William Boyle was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist, and inventor born in Lismore.
  • He was the seventh son of the earl of Cork.
  • He was educated at Eton and travelled and studied in Europe.
  • In 1644 Boyle was extremely interested in science, so he settled in Dorset and built a laboratory.
  • In 1644 or 1655, he moved to Oxford.
  • Since he moved to Oxford he engaged Robert Hooke as an assistant and together they devised the most famous piece of experimental equipment associated with Boyle.
  • He discovered Boyle’s Law - the first of the gas laws - relating the pressure of gas to its volume.
  • He influenced Isaac Newton.
  • He was considered the father of chemistry.
  • He was one of the founders of modern chemistry.
