The glucose connected with other glucose creates chains held together by hydrogen bonds. This originates as a crystalline substance and hydrophobic. This to be then transformed into hydrophilic cellulose must be subjected to a mercerization process.

The collection of used paper and board is the first step in the recycling process. There are different national and regional collection systems for paper. 

Separation:
Paper for recycling has to be collected separately from other materials. It is important that it is kept separate from other waste as contaminated papers are not acceptable for recycling. If, in some cases, paper is collected together with other recyclable materials, such recovered paper must be specifically marked.


Pulping:
As a first step, recovered paper is sorted and graded then delivered to a paper mill. Having reached the paper mill, it is 'slushed' into pulp and large non-fibrous contaminants are removed (for example staples, plastic, glass etc.). The fibres are progressively cleaned and the resulting pulp is filtered and screened a number of times to make it suitable for papermaking.

De-inking:
The fibres are then progressively cleaned in order to obtain the pulp and during this stage the ink is removed in a flotation process where air is blown into the solution. The ink adheres to bubbles of air and rises to the surface from where it is separated.   • Recycling paper conserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and keeps landfill space free for other types of trash that can't be recycled. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy-enough to power the average U.S. home for six months- and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent (MTCE).  
  • The cost of recycled raw material is considerably lower than that of wood pulp, its waste can be used as Vapor co-generator fuel necessary for the manufacturing process, and production is less polluting;
  •  Recycling reduces the amount of waste to be treated, the associated storage costs, the waste of space to be allocated to storage, pollution from incineration, and obviously the consumption of live trees (even though the trees used for the production of paper come from nurseries for programmed cultivation where they are periodically cut and ripened).

    Pulp extraction consumes large amounts of energy and can involve dangerous chemicals like dioxin. Paper production results in the emission of the nutrient phosphorus. That, in turn, boosts plant growth, which can use up all the oxygen in the water and kill any animal life.
    Even after paper is made, its use damages the environment. Trucking paper from where it’s made to where it’s used generates air pollution. And making and using ink and toner also harm the environment, by contaminating water, poisoning soil and destroying the natural habitats of wildlife.
