Sacagawea has gone through alot. She did not even know if her family was alive. She got traded to someone, she was in an attack and she was expecting a baby at the age of 15. Also she survived a very bad storm when she was on a pirogue.

A Shoshone Girl

Sacagawea was born in either 1789 or 1790 but nobody knows. She was part of the Shoshone tribe. She lived in a tipi near the Rocky Mountains. They camped near the Snake River so they were often called the Snake Indians.

Lewis and Clark Expedition

Lewis and Clark needed someone who could speak Shoshone, so Sacagawea and her husband Toussaint Charbonneau went with them on the journey.

The Storm

On May 14, 1805 it was very foggy. They were in a pirogue and Sacagawea's husband was steering. They were 300 feet from shore when suddenly, wind came and the boat quickly filled up with water. Sacagawea saw their supplies floating away from them. She saved them.

Getting Traded

Sacagawea was about 10 or 11 when suddenly the Minnetaree Indians attacked. The Minnetaree had guns. The only things that the Shoshone had were bow and arrows. About 15 Shoshone had died during the attack. Sacagawea was running across a river when a warrior captured her. They rode away on a horse. The warrior gave her to a Minnetaree family. Next, a man named Toussaint Charbonneau wanted Sacagawea to be his wife. Sacagawea got traded to him. Just like that Sacagawea became one of his Indian wives.

The Expeditions Influence

During the Louis and Clark expedition they found more land. Since they found this land, now different people in the United States can live there in the modern world.

Saving the Supplies

When Sacagawea had grabbed the supplies that fell out of the boat during the storm everyone on that expedition would have had to turn back. Since she did save those supplies they did not have to turn back.
