Heroes tells a story about a couple who each live on the other side of the Berlin wall. It is a story of hope and hopelessness, it depicts the desperation of a city divided. Bowie decided to perform his hit song Heroes. Although East Berlin was safer than in the 1970s, it was still under communist rule and therefore not free. The people in the East were not allowed to go to this concert. Thousands of people from the East gathered at the wall to listen, "So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again." Many of the people enjoying the concert were brutally attacked and arrested. People were outraged and many of the younger people in the crowd began standing up against the soviet controlled government.
