One of the most popular songs in David Bowies "Berlin trilogy", Heroes was written in 1977 and released in 1981, while Bowie was living in west Berlin during the late '70s. Heroes tells a story about a couple who each live on the other side of the Berlin wall. It is a story of hope and hopelessness, it depicts the desperation of a city divided. Dedicated to the men and women who died while trying to cross the wall for loved ones.

About a decade after David Bowie had written the song, he was invited to come back to West Berlin and perform at the Concert for Berlin. Bowie decided to perform his hit song Heroes. Although East Berlin was safer than in the 1970s, it was still under communist rule and therefore not free. The people in the East were not allowed to go to this concert. The soviets in East Berlin had a hard time blocking the radio signals from the West so an American Radio station managed to get the rights to broadcast the whole concert for those in the East.

The concert was so close to the Berlin wall that it could be clearly heard just over the other side. Thousands of people from the East gathered at the wall to listen, "So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again." David Bowie said in a much later interview.

On the third day of the concert, the Eastern authorities finally had enough of the secondary concert going on on their side of the wall. Many of the people enjoying the concert were brutally attacked and arrested. People were outraged and many of the younger people in the crowd began standing up against the soviet controlled government. Many say that Bowies performance helped bring down the Berlin wall, even though it is not 100% true, his song definitely lit the fire for revolution.

I had never heard of this song and I thought it was interesting that he had such a deep connection to the cold war. I enjoy the song and really enjoyed the research.
