I appreciated what he said, that day was very confusing and bad for all of us and I think it was comforting that he made a statement. His strength is definitely communication, I appreciate that he reaches out to us after major events happen and doesn’t just ignore it. That being said, I wish our educators would have talked to us more about it.

I appreciate the communication because in the past I am not 100 percent sure we would have received that email. The email opened the door for a conversation to begin and one that needs to continue to occur.
Yet, I felt it did not go far enough into describing the events that occured on Jan 6th or the impact it had on people. The events on Jan 6th were a stark reminder of the giant divide in this county.

I appreciated how Mr. Bell took the time to reach out to us as a whole to make sure we are all doing well because it is obvious that events like this can put us in a bad and stressful headspace. It was comforting to read how he took the big focus off of politics and put it into God. He reminded us that even in the worst times, God is always there for us to turn to for guidance and security. Even with that being said, I still think it is important to discuss events like this and everything going on right now because we are living through it and it is best to understand and stay educated through it all.

I'm still in shock at the actions of the people who stormed the capitol building to be honest. I appreciated the email that was sent out by Mr. Bell because I agree with Ms. Harrison that in the past, this may have been overlooked. Metaphorically speaking, a lot of times silence is violence. So I appreciate Mr. Bell and everything he's done and communicated with everyone so far. But it's going to take more than just him. The people around him and in our Gibbons community need to be on board. This isn't a politics issue we've been dealing with, it's a basic humanity issue. And the quicker people realize that and come together as a human race, the better off this country will end up being for generations to come.

Mr. Hill's Viewpoint

Truthfully, I was highly frustrated. The fiasco that occured at the Capitol was an astronomical slap to the face for people of color. The double standard has been and was blatantly obvious. What transpired was groundbreaking and has set a dangerous precedent moving forward. Is mentally damaging for all people, especially our kids. I'm praying for wisdom and discernment as I navigate how to discuss this with students and other educators. Mr. Bell has inspired me with the constant effort he displays in providing transparent communication with the Gibbons Community. I recognize and appreciate how he strives to be intentional in how he addresses matters such as this one. However, I believe Mr. Bell could have addressed "exactly" what occurred that day on Capitol. It's beyond politics and choosing sides...it's about right vs wrong. With that being said, it will take more than an email from Mr. Bell to transform our community's approach towards these type of discussions.

TJ's Response

I believe in the past, we would have chose to ignore it. So I appreciate his thoughts and his understanding for everyone's view and confusion on the order. My teachers talked about it, but I did have a teacher argue with my point of view, instead of trying to understand what I had to say. I don't think her view would have sat well with many teachers, but she definitely held back some things she had in mind, and for that part- I am thankful. Again, I feel we are definitely progressing- and talking about the issues is the biggest thing we can do to help Gibbons progress and get great at this.
